Scipio Who: Scipio was born to a Patrician Roman family. His father was a consul and was killed in the Second Punic War. Scipio, who was trained to be a military leader, followed the path of his father and became a famed military strategist and leader. He proceeded to end the Second Punic War. What: A great military strategist and military leader. Cato the Elder who: A Roman statesman who was influenced by his service in the 2nd Punic war and by his military styled family. What: In his time as a statesman, he influenced the senate to declare war on Carthage and destroy it in the process, his famous quote of this was “Carthage must be destroyed!” When: 234 B.C.E.-149 B.C.E. Where: Roman republic Why: He had a great fear and hatred for Carthage after his service in the second punic war Impact: He was a pushing factor that lead to the unnecessary 3rd Punic war. Pax Romana Who- The Roman Empire (Established by Augustus) What-A long period of ‘peace’ and minimal expansion that happened for around 206 years. Pax Romana was established by Augustus, and was sometimes referred to Pax Augustus. And ended after the death of Marcus Auretlius. When: This period happened between the 1st Century C.E. and the 2nd Century C.E. Where: Rome (The Roman Empire) Why: It was a so called ‘miracle’ because there had not been peace in so many years. Tiberius Gracchus Who: Roman politician and ex Roman soldier What: a plebeian tribune. He tried to help the poor citizens with the agrarian legislation. He was murdered by senate members who didn’t want to lose money to his legislation to help the poor. He was the first Roman soldier over the walls of Carthage in the 3rd Punic War. When: BCE Where: Roman Republic Why: Tried to help the poor of Rome and stabilize the declining republic.
