These are Overall grades! Missing! Total Missing/incomplete Assignments for each class! Incomplete!

Grading Periods in Middle School In Middle School, we are on a Semester System. The first semester is made up of first and second quarters and ends right before Winter Break. The second semester is made up of 3 rd and 4 th quarters and begins in January and ends in June at the end of the school year. There will be a report card for each quarter. Please know that the grading is cumulative by semester. The gradebook starts fresh again in January.

Rules and Expectations Are posted in my room and clearly stated. Students need to come to class prepared: colored pencils, red pen, and pencils are needed. (this is usually not a problem at the start of the year, but quickly turns to a problem) Gum is not allowed here at Cope. Homework needs to be completed and is the quickest way to help or hurt your child’s grade depending on his or her habits Water bottles are encouraged! Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated

Supplies Lined paper Pencils (many!) Highlighters Index Cards (500) RED pens for correcting Colored Pencils or Markers encouraged Flash Drive (encouraged for classes) A Handheld Pencil Sharpener!

Work Expectations All work is to be completed in pencil (unless it is a special project) Work must be shown in Math in order to receive credit. With the new Common Core, students will be required to explain their steps too. Students will be strongly encouraged to work in groups. All papers should have the student’s first and last name, date and period at the top!

LATE WORK Incomplete or Late work may be turned into the Late Box for 15% reduction of the grade. (AGAIN: Missing work negatively affects your child’s grade the most, make sure the work gets turned in to me) During the fourth quarter, the Late Box is retired and Late Work will no longer be accepted at that point. This is to prepare for 7 th grade.

Consequences of Not Following Rules: Poor Performance in class and not a great deal of learning! Lunch Detention Time out in another classroom (Refocus)/ Parent Notified Loss of school privileges Administration/Counselor involvement

Math Carnegie Math is designed with 3 days of classroom instruction/group work, and 2 days on Mathia software for students to practice Math skills. The students have begun the Mathia software in class. Students may work in Mathia at home too! Their performance in Mathia will be part of their Math grade.

Common Core Math- continued This approach to learning Math Skills involves group work, pair work, and independent work. It is designed for students to work through and discover Math concepts and patterns together. Additionally, students each received a composition book for notetaking.

Science Our textbook is Focus on Earth Science by McDougal Littell Students also received a red Interactive Reader for Close Reading exercises that align with the new Common Core Standards. These books should remain in the student’s backpack.

Science Quizzes and Tests Dates are posted ahead of time on my website All material needed to do well on the quizzes or tests are given to your child ahead of time. Also, all study guides will be posted in advance on my website. If the student takes time to pay attention in class, complete assignments, and focus on the study guides, he or she should do very well!

Common Core/Content Standards We work through the California Content Standards for 6 th grade Science. Common Core Standards for Math and other subjects are available at the district website Power Standards (standards tested most frequently) are the focus for each Module. We complete about 3 modules per semester for a total of 5/6. (depending on the subject)

District Common Assessments Every four to six weeks (approximately) Following district Scope and Sequence, which aligns with the State and Common Core Standards Common Assessments are weighted at 15% of the student’s grade Semester Final Exams are weighted at 5% of the overall grade

Ways for students to get help! Visit my room at lunch or before school to receive extra help Review lessons from my webpages me with questions! Re-read your notes Work with another student (not copying, actually getting help) ;)

DONATIONS Welcomed! Our classroom is in need of the following donations: -Clorox Wipes for our desks and shared objects -Candy (individually wrapped) for rewards -Antibacterial Handsoap -Pencils
