Presentation transcript:

State Hygienic Laboratory Environmental Health Division Governmental Food and Feed Laboratories Accreditation Meeting Louisville, Kentucky February 4, 2016 Challenges for Sustaining ISO Accredited Processed Food Testing Program

Why develop program? SHL is Iowa’s environmental and public health laboratory Processed food testing program – similar equipment/instrumentation and staffing in place from environmental testing programs SHL is an FDA FERN cCAP laboratory SHL is ISO accredited for industrial hygiene and environmental lead testing NELAP accreditation aligned with ISO 17025

Challenges Must identify funding means to maintain/sustain: – Salary support – Equipment/instrumentation – Training – Travel – IT support for test reports and (at some point) downloading data directly into eLEXNET – Accreditation costs for two laboratory facilities – Costs for mandated proficiency testing programs Possible funding – Legislative support – Expand and charge manufacturers for processed food testing
