00 Title Header Student Reps Training 2015 Michael Spence: Education Officer Charlotte Raynes : Student Rep Coordinator Lisa Tighe : Student Rep Assistant Becky Fox and George Liddle: Student Rep Interns

00 Title  What is Representation?  Roles and Responsibilities  Who will I work with?  Decision making  Benefits and Opportunities What do you need to know?

00 Title

00 Title What is Representation? Help other students Improve my Course Learn new skills Inform University decision making To make new friends Other students/staff asked me to It’s a new/fun experience I’ve done it before/knew I’d be good at it Because no-one else wanted to  Reasons for becoming a Rep

00 Title What is Representation? “Anything about us, without us, is not for us” This means YOU and YOUR COURSEMATES are vital to the whole process of making change. The Students’ Union IS the student body Where does the SU fit into this?

00 Title Roles and Responsibilities Gather feedback Get some evidence Raise the issue Work with staff to find a solution Let students know the results! The Feedback loop

00 Title Roles and Responsibilities Gathering Feedback Make a Facebook group Use your intranet system Access s Face to Face Survey Monkey or Facebook polls Unit Evaluations Hold stalls or meetings Shout outs Raising Issues relevant staff Arrange a meeting with staff Bring it up in SSLC meeting Faculty Officer/Education Officer Campaign on it with other Reps Feedback to Students Post-meeting newsletter Poster space in your common room Social Media How can I perform as a Rep?

00 Title Roles and Responsibilities A professor is speaking too quickly in lectures and some students are finding it difficult to follow. A)Bring it to your Staff-Student Liaison Committee. B)Ignore it as it’s a personal complaint against a lecturer. C) the professor involved. D)Something else. What would you do…

00 Title Answer could be A or C or D If students don’t feel confident bringing it up directly to the lecturer than they could wait till the SSLC. Think to the extent its affecting peoples learning- politely worded instead of leaving the situation a couple of weeks etc.

00 Title Roles and Responsibilities You’ve asked staff in your SSLC if they could change the date of the deadline, however, they’ve said that this isn’t possible. What would you do? A)Accept that it is a difficult situation and it obviously cannot be changed. B) Accept that you cannot solve it and inform your Faculty Officer of the issue. C)Share your problem with other Reps and see if anyone else wants to work with you. D)Something else. What would you do…

00 Title Answer could be any of these. It is really up to you, A would be least preferred as even if you don’t want to /have the time to take it further, others might want to B or C, so always best to share.

00 Title Roles and Responsibilities A student feels that they have been marked unfairly in their latest piece of coursework and wants you to help them to change it. Would you.. A)Go to the lecturer on behalf of the student. B)See if others have had a similar problem and if they have take the issue to SSLC. C)Signpost the student to relevant services that can help them D)Something else. What would you do…

00 Title B/C probably the best answer; if this is a wider problem then it is your role but it isn’t your job to advise and help individual issues. We’ll talk a little later about places that you can signpost to if necessary.
