Unit 4 Overview This week in Unit 4, our explorations become even more personalized to you as an individual. We will explore the customized part of your degree program, where you get to choose the classes that you are interested in taking as electives to build the path to your personally selected career in the field of early childhood development.

Objectives After completing this unit, you should be able to: Describe your reasons for choosing the elective course clusters Explore specializations in the field of early childhood development Develop your Customized Early Childhood Development Degree Plan Course outcomes practiced in this unit: CE100-4: Apply basic knowledge of the early childhood professional role to program and professional goals GEL-1.1: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English

Transfer Credits IF you have enough transfer credits to fulfill your elective requirements, then type Transfer Credits where your electives should go. Please make sure to use the correct excel spreadsheet. IF you can partially fulfill the elective requirement with Transfer Credits, type in electives and type Transfer Credits underneath.

Reading In this week's reading, you will read about the elective courses you can choose to customize your degree in early childhood development. Please read the document related to your degree program. Choose A.S. if you are in an Associates Program and B.S. if you are in a Bachelor’s Program. In addition, go to the Kaplan University course catalog and read the course descriptions for the elective courses offered. If you do not have a course catalog, you can access one from your student webpage by following these directions: ◦Go to the Kaplan KU Campus page. ◦Scroll down to Resources under My Classes. ◦Click Documents. ◦Click University Catalog AND Addendum ◦Scroll down to Undergraduate Course Descriptions to read descriptions of all the classes offered at Kaplan University

Seminar Question #1 What are the requirements of your degree program? How many hours worth of electives do you have to have in your program?

Seminar Question #2 How do the courses in your degree plan and the program outcomes support the skills you need to perform well in early childhood field?

Question # 3 What questions do you have about the customized degree plan?

Project In this project, you will choose the elective classes or clusters of electives that will personalize and customize your Early Childhood Development Degree Plan. You may choose one of the sample elective class clusters or create your own; in addition, there may be other individual electives you want to take. A cluster around a particular theme probably will not use all your electives. So you’ll have to explore the course catalog – which is also one of our readings.

Transfer Credit Reminders Work on obtaining transfer credits if necessary. Transfer credits will use up some or all of your elective hours. To check the status of your transfer credits, go to the KU Campus Page and click on My Degree plan.

Transfer Credits IF you have enough transfer credits to fulfill your elective requirements, then type Transfer Credits where your electives should go. Please make sure to use the correct excel spreadsheet. IF you can partially fulfill the elective requirement with Transfer Credits, type in the electives you need to fulfill the requirement and type Transfer Credits underneath (to indicate that the balance of your elective hours will be met by using transfer credits.

If you have no transfer credits…. B.S. Degree = 54 hours of electives (six 100/200 level courses and four 300/400 level courses) A.A. Degree = 25 hours of electives (five 100/200 level courses) *Before choosing a catalog course, check to see if there is a prerequisite. Challenge Exams are available. The following can be added as electives: EL 203 Service Learning Course

Final Reminders Please make sure your electives add up to the number required for your degree program. Please make sure that if your electives require prerequisites, to include them. Please make sure the courses you have chosen are at the correct level: and/or level courses.

Summary Slide 1. Choose A.S. or B.S. 2. Choose appropriate levels: for A.S. or both for B.S. 3. Decide if you want to take EL 203, Challenge Exams or Service Learning Course. 4. Choose cluster from readings or create your own from clusters or catalog. 5. LOOK for prerequisites for catalog courses. 6. Do NOT repeat required courses.

ONE LAST THING….. You should be using Kaplan’s Catalog to search for courses. IF, IF, IF…..You choose a course from the KU Catalog, please type the page number at the end of the course listing. Example: XJ975 Learning to Love Nutty Professors p.85

Remember……… There are two parts to the Unit 4 Project.

Last thought on the Project Please remember that there are two documents for the unit 4 project: ◦An excel spread sheet – Associates or Bachelors ◦The template sharing- here are the questions:  Why have you chosen the elective classes included in your degree plan?  What skills and knowledge do you expect to learn from these classes?  How will these individual skills and knowledge help you in your field?  How will these electives further your career goals in general? ◦PLEASE SUBMIT AS TWO SEPARATE PROJECTS TO THE PROJECT DROPBOX.

REVIEW 1. Do you want to take the Service Learning Course, EL 203, or a challenge exam (contact your advisor). 2. Do you have transfer credits? 3. Choose the correct excel spreadsheet. 4.Type in your name at the top. 5. Make sure you have the correct number of hours for your degree program (Total number minus Transfer Credits). 6. CONDITIONAL ADMITTANCE POLICY NOTICE REMINDER NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED IN UNIT 5 Please be aware of the following policy, which affects all incoming KU students: · All Kaplan University undergraduate students will be considered conditionally admitted to the University and will not receive financial aid while in this status. All University policies nevertheless apply to such students, and they enjoy all the rights and resources of a fully instated student during the period of conditional admittance. · At the end of the fifth week of classes, the University will review the academic performance of conditionally admitted students. Students who have earned a grade up to that point of 65 percent or higher for all coursework will be allowed to continue in their program and will only then be eligible for disbursement of any financial aid and to receive credit for the course. The University will reverse the enrollment of any student not meeting these criteria, and such a student will not owe any financial obligation to the University except for the application fee, which is non- refundable · Students whose enrollments are reversed in this manner may not reapply for admission for one year unless they qualify for a waiver as applied by the dean of their respective school.

Work must be submitted by Tuesday nights at midnight…. This week I will start taking off points for late work 
