Innovation Compass

A recommendation of Innovation Health and Wealth was to demonstrate how NHS organisations and health systems are currently innovating and how they can be supported to improve The NHS needed to develop a clearer understanding of performance in relation to accelerating innovation, including adoption & diffusion on a wider scale The NHS should look to provide patients & public with access to information about how NHS organisations and systems are using innovation to improve service quality and increase choice Background

clear, transparent and easy to understand based on information that is reliable, valid and consistent uses both qualitative & quantitative information to provide a robust assessment facilitates discussion within organisations and health systems, of individual and collective roles in innovation The Compass tool is -

An international partnership led by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS FT and Yorkshire & Humber Quality Observatory worked with key partners including: Department of Health Yorkshire and Humber SHA Jonkoping County Council, Sweden Dartmouth Institute, USA Representatives from providers, CCGs Key partners involved in its’ original development (2012)

The prototype looked like this, measuring High Impact Innovations..

A systematic search was undertaken of a range of sources e.g. NHS Evidence Healthcare databases Kings Fund Health Management database NHS Institute website Some tools/models were found that complemented our work e.g. NHS Institute’s Culture for Innovation Framework Two literature reviews highlighted key evidence of what works (Department of Health, 2006 and Williams, 2009) and a further expert commentary (Williams, 2011) A number of evidence sources were used to develop a framework for the tool

Innovation capability was split into 4 domains - each of which has 4 drivers

Based on responses to indicator statements, the tool calculates a score for each domain

The compass is a diagnostic tool, which will assist organisations in recognising where there are areas for improvement AHSNs may wish to manage, challenge and follow-up to explore improvement/development Peer review? – Organisations could look at how they are performing against similar bodies How will the tool be used?
