Classroom Procedures 7 th Grade Science & Honors & NAL Mrs. McEvoy Room 224

Why Should We Have Procedures in Our Classroom?

Procedures are a part of life. They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low stress, and less wasted time. Airports Driving Restaurants Movies School Where else are procedures practiced?

Classroom and Academic Expectations

Classroom Expectations The atmosphere in this classroom will be formal and academic, but comfortable. Students will work hard, learn science, and enjoy the process. If a visitor walked into our classroom during the day, what should they see?

I expect students to do the following things to make sure the classroom runs smoothly: Attend class, and arrive on time. Be in your seat and have materials ready when the bell rings. Listen when others are speaking. Follow directions the first time they are given. Get permission before speaking. Be polite and respectful toward each other. Stay on-task and focused on science.

Academic Expectations Come to class on time and have materials ready. Follow teacher’s directions and complete assignments. Work hard and enjoy the process. Do your best. Have a positive attitude.

Daily Procedures

Entering the Classroom Procedure 1.Enter the room quickly and quietly. 2.Pick up handouts on the front table. 3.Fill in your daily planner. 4.Read the “catalyst” assignment posted on the board and start working. 5.If you finish the “catalyst” assignment early, work on something else quietly. 6.Quietly, patiently wait for instruction.

“Catalyst” Procedure 1.Pick up handouts, be seated, and gather materials for class. 2.Read the catalyst assignment on the board and start working. 3.Do not wait for the teacher or the bell. 4.If you finish the catalyst assignment early, find something quiet to work on while others are finishing.

What is “Catalyst” work? The assignment will vary from day to day, but may include: Current events Writing assignment Vocabulary review Lesson preview It will be turned in and graded weekly.

When you finish work early... quietly read a book. organize your planner or homework. sit quietly. do a puzzle. work on homework. wait patiently. Do not disturb others around you

Daily Schedule Catalyst assignment Daily objective and agenda Teacher–instructions/Modeling Student–guided instruction/Practice Assessment/Closure/ Exit slips

Class Opening Procedures I. Catalyst assignment time A. Students work on bellwork catalyst B. Teacher takes attendance, returns papers and checks on individual students as needed. II. After the catalyst assignment A. Teacher announces daily/weekly agenda. B. Teacher discusses returned papers/feedback. C. Catalyst follow up. D. Daily lesson begins.

Tardy Procedure (1) Enter the classroom quietly, pick up the daily handouts, and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption. You must turn in a pink “tardy form” explaining the reason for the tardy. Please note the time you enter the class on the slip also.

Tardy Procedure (2) If you accumulate 3 tardy forms or more in one grading period, your citizenship grade will reflect that and note will be sent home with warning. If you accumulate 4 tardy forms or more in one grading period, a note will be sent home and a U in citizenship. If you are more than 10 minutes late to class (unexcused), it will be counted as an unexcused absence/ truant.

Absence Procedure When you are absent, check the weekly calendar and website to find out what you missed. If you are missing work from an absence, get a copy from side file box. You will have until the end of the week to complete your missed work.

Listening to/Responding to Questions When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking. Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours.

Working Together in Groups Each student in a cooperative group will have a task which will be assigned by teacher or determined by group members. Noise level of group must be controlled so all groups can work or entire class will have to stay after bell to make up time. Sometimes students will evaluate the members of group for part of the grade.

Getting the Class’ Attention The teacher will say, “Listen up” or “I need your attention” and I will hold up my hand. When you see my hand you are to 1) stop what you are doing. 2) look at the teacher. 3) raise your hand until the class is silent.

Walking in the Hall Procedure When we are walking in the hall (fire drills, labs, outdoors) Stay with the group. Go quickly and quietly to the destination.

End of the Period Dismissal Procedure 1.Hand in daily work. 2.Put away materials. Make sure desk area is neat and trash is picked up. 3.When the bell rings, be seated and look at the teacher (All students must be seated). 4.Teacher dismisses class. 5.Push in chairs and proceed quickly and quietly out the door.

Classroom Rules

Follow teacher’s directions. Do not disrupt class. Be polite and courteous to others. Stay seated and on task. Do not throw or toss anything. Keep hands and objects to yourself. No profanity. Follow teacher’s directions.

Classroom Consequences Verbal warning Seating change Send to office Conference with teacher Call parents Other: detention, action plan form, behavior contract

Behavior Intervention Sit in safe seat Sent out of the classroom Calls to parents Office referral Work with others to develop a behavior plan Create action plan to determine a better behavior

Students Leaving the Classroom Get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. You must have planner to leave the room. Teacher will sign planner. Go quickly and quietly without disrupting other rooms. Return quietly and get back to work.

Restroom Use The best time for restroom use is during passing period. You should not leave class to use the restroom unless it is truly necessary. You must get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. Only person at a time will use the bathroom.

Student’s Sudden Illness Tell teacher where you are going. Go to the office or restroom. Follow up with the teacher when you are better. Note: You should not be “suddenly ill” very often.

Safety Drills Where do you go in case of a fire drill?

Fire Drill Exit through doors to the left, down main stairs. Go to front parking area and find me. Make sure there is room for an emergency vehicle to pull up to the school. Wait until you are called back inside. Walk quickly and quietly back to the classroom. Get seated and quickly return to the classroom task.

Safety/ Lockdown Drill Teacher locks door and turns off lights. Students stay in room without talking. Students wait for further instructions.

Other Procedures

Classroom Visitors You may smile and you may say hello if it is appropriate and it does not disrupt the class. Continue to work in class as you normally would. Remember to make a good impression for visitors. We want to impress them.

Sustitute Teacher Be polite and respectful. The teacher is a guest and we want to make a good impression. Continue to work in class as you normally would. Follow directions. Remember, we want to impress all visitors in our classroom.

Teacher Away from the Room Step 1: Be seated and start working on the bellwork assignment as usual. Step 2: Sit quietly, be patient, and use the time to work on other academic assignments. Step 3: Contact another science teacher in a nearby room.

Lab Procedures

Students will learn lab safety and pass the test before going to lab. Teacher will explain the lab and review safety before going. Students walk quietly to lab and find their seat with assigned partner(s). Teacher will give final directions before starting.

Lab Procedures Continued Students follow lab directions carefully Clean up any spills. Reset lab for next class. Have lab paper stamped for full credit. Turn in assignment.

Thank You!!! Thank you for following the classroom procedures. This will allow us to have a wonderful, creative, and productive year in science class with minimal stress and wasted time. What other procedures should be added to our classroom list?

Other Procedures Test taking procedures Using lab equipment Textbooks Listening to announcements
