PODCASTING: EXPANDING AUDIENCE REACH Greg Hernandez NOAA Media Relations And NOAA.gov Editor Washington, D.C.

EXPANDING YOUR AUDIENCE A podcast is a new method to reach existing and new audiences with content they select. Podcasts make content come alive with audio. They should be informative, interesting and entertaining.

NOAA PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND PODCASTS Podcasts are mini radio programs that highlight the science and research being conducted at the agency. Like the NOAA home page, podcasts “push” content to a worldwide audience.

NOAA PODCASTS The first podcast was Aug. 2, 2005, with an update to the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook. SIDE BENEFIT OF PODCASTS Provide an opportunity to add sound bites of NOAA newsmakers to NOAA home page news stories. Broadcast-quality audio can be used by radio stations.

NOAA PODCAST & RSS STATS

PODCAST STATS ROUNDUP From Aug. 2, 2005 through Feb. 14, 2006: From Aug. 2, 2005 through Feb. 14, 2006: NOAA Podcast Download: more than 52,300 NOAA Podcast RSS Feed Viewed: more than 170,000 times

THE NUMBERS TELL THE TALE What’s the news behind the numbers? * *The audience wants more NOAA podcasts dealing with varying topics, but it also wants podcasts tied to current news stories.

PUSHING CONTENT: “To Infinity and Beyond” Podcasts used with RSS Feeds are a great combination to “push” news stories to an already built-in audience for NOAA.gov. NOAA is expanding its audience by having podcasts registered in podcast directories.

PODCAST DIRECTORIES Promote your podcast by listing them in multiple directories that list the programs by subject matter, which makes them searchable. Write little promos for your podcast. RSS feeds for podcasts with enclosure tags so that your podcast can be found.
