Gothic Fiction Mary Shelley`s Fankenstain The illustration was drawn by Theodor Phon Holst -Gothic fiction, sometimes referred to as Gothic horror. -Its origin is attributed to English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, subtitled (in its second edition) "A Gothic Story." -It originated in England in the second half of the 18th century and had much success in the 19th as witnessed by Mary helley’s Frankenstein and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. -The name Gothic refers to the (pseudo)-medieval buildings in which many of these stories take place. -The English gothic novel also led to new novel types such as the German Schauerroman and the French roman noir.

Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) -Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. -Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. -He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.

Edgar Allan Poe -He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts; he was orphaned at a young age when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him. -He attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. After enlisting in the Army and later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point, Poe parted ways with the Allans. -His publishing career began humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". -Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields, such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. -The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished work in the mystery genre.

Summary -Protagonist of the novel, man was originally gentle and a man who loved animals awfully. But he gradually turned into alcoholic and a personality disorder, not content with abusing pet, he began to assault his wife even. -One day, he also came back with drunk without fail. As Pluto is his cherished black cat was about to avoid secretly, he had became a prisoner of devilish fury in the moment and gouged out the eyes of Pluto with a knife. He felt guilty, but in the result he strangled the cat on the branch of a tree. -After day, he brought a one-eyed black cat which looked just like the Pluto from a bar in the home. The new black cat had a white mark on the chest unlike Pluto. By the way, the mark was more growing as time goes by, formed like gallows. He decided to kill the cat.

Summary -At the point of he killed the cat in the basement, his wife stopped him. He was very angry, so he just killed her. He found that the cat had gone. He immediately hid his wife in the wall. He stood her on the wall, and then he made some wall to hide her body. -After he killed his wife, policemen visited in his house to investigate that case. He didn`t be concerned about that. Who did man know that she is in the wall? Further, he felt proud his work and patted the wall saying the wall is very strong. -By the way, a strange noise was suddenly heard in the basement wall. The policemen knocked down the wall, and then blood congealed her body looked down all of their. And disappeared one-eyed cat was crying to open its red mouth wide on the body`s head.
