WISER Training Scenario Mobile Meth Lab Specialized Information Services National Library of Medicine

Scenario After a short chase down gravel roads, police pull over a pick-up truck that had been reported as stolen. During the chase a glass bottle inside the truck broke, spilling its contents over the empty passenger's side floor mat. What’s left of the bottle holds a clear, colorless liquid with a strong, hard-to- describe odor. Search of the cab and bed of the vehicle reveals several unlabelled jars as well as materials used in Mom-n-Pop Meth labs. The suspect, now in custody, complains he is feeling ill. He says his girlfriend packed the truck and he doesn’t know what was in the broken jar though he was exposed to the substance for several minutes while in the cab of the pick-up. He is sneezing and has swollen and tearing eyes. Photos used with permission of Jackson County Ohio Emergency Management Agency,

Questions What substance was probably in the glass jar? What are treatment guidelines?

Follow-Up Substance Categories speed identification Substance Categories can also be used to filter the Known Substance list. New question: A plastic container is found with residue of a red, crystalline solid that has a vaguely garlic-like odor. Nearby, a twisted coffee filter is found filled with more of the substance. What might this be? Should protective equipment be worn when handling it? Photo used with permission of Jackson County Ohio Emergency Management Agency,
