Superintendent’s Ultimate Readers Award (SURA) Grades K-12 August 24, April 15, 2016 MCSD Department of Teaching and Learning

Rationale Monroe County School District recognizes independent reading as a critical component of a student’s development. The purpose of the SURA program is to encourage and commend students for reading outside of the school day. Florida Standards also call for students to Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. LAFS.K12.R.4.10

Student Choice Literature: Classics Stories (includes adventure stories, historical fiction, mysteries, myths, science fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, allegories, parodies, satire, and graphic novels) Dramas (includes one act and multi-act plays) Poetry (includes narrative poems, lyrical poems, free verse poems, sonnets, odes, ballads, and epics) Informational Texts: Nonfiction and Historical, Scientific and Technical Texts (includes exposition, argument, personal essays, speeches, opinion pieces, biographies, memoirs, journalism, essays about art or literature, and historical, scientific or economic accounts written for a broad audience) Award Winning Books: Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King, International Reading Association, Pulitzer, & American Library Association Award Books Florida Reading Association (FRA) Children’s Book Award (K-2), Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Grades 3-5 & 6-8, & Florida Teen’s Read grades 9-12.

SURA Requirements Reading for homework may also count as long as it is done outside the school day.

Accountability & Documentation Students may use the SURA reading log or any other log tracking minutes. Documentation is due April 15th & will be verified by the ELA/Reading teacher..

Accelerated Reader Goals AR Goals STAR Min. Read Goals are differentiated by reading ability for each student. Determined at the beginning of each quarter. Goals have 2 parts; Most important, students must maintain an average of 85% Correct on quizzes, & Students meet their individualized point goal based on their reading ability.

Award & Raffle All students who complete the 1 st, 2 nd, & 3 rd quarter AR goals and/or complete the minimum number of minutes outlined in the grade level range will be presented a SURA award by the Superintendent at a school site ceremony taking place during the last month of the school year. In addition, all students who earn at least 100 Accelerated Reader points and maintain an 85% average correct will have their name entered in a raffle for a Kindle Fire.

Activities to Promote Reading Individual & group conferences or book chats. Provide instruction in book selection strategies such as “5 Finger Rule”, interest inventories, or electronic book recommendation tools. Teacher, librarian, & peer recommendations/ booktalks. Visit/partner with Public library & FKCC to promote additional resources. Weekly D.E.A.R. time. Literature circles. Traditional, creative book reports,& dioramas. Book clubs. Classroom & school Reading/AR incentives. Book swaps &/or RIF distributions. Participation in state reading award programs- FRA Children’s Book Award K-2, SSYRA 3-5, SSYRA 6-8, & Teen’s Read Participation in Pizza Hut’s Book It! (K-6) Participation in school wide literacy events such as Read-a-thon, Celebrate Literacy Week, Million Minutes Marathon, Read Across America Day, poetry slams, family reading nights, & Children’s Book Week. Access to classroom libraries. Content area reading. Regular access to Library/Media collection & Destiny catalog for print & electronic reading material. Destiny “My Quest” Social networking Routine review of Accelerated Reader records to monitor student reading selections, quiz results, as well as provide timely intervention for students when necessary. Use of innovative technologies to view, create, &/or share original responses to literature such as blogging, book trailers, online reviews, reports, & presentations.
