TELPAS Training

What is TELPAS? According to the TEA website, The Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) is designed to assess the progress that limited English proficient (LEP) students make in learning the English language. The Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLD’s): Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Advanced High

TELPAS Writing SGP 2013 ALL teachers will be required to submit two TELPAS Writing Samples of ELL students. All TELPAS Writing Samples and classroom writing samples should be done as a whole class project where all students participate. Students who are absent must make it up. Only the TELPAS Writing Samples of students who are actually ELL will be submitted to the LPAC chair. Keep the other classroom samples in a manilla folder or accordion file in your classroom. It is possible we may need to retrieve some of these later. Only those students who are actually ELL identified (LPAC list) will have their TELPAS Writing Samples rated by a certified TELPAS rater (ELA teachers, etc.) for submission to the state. Some teachers will also be asked to verify the samples. No student is to do their TELPAS Writing Sample in isolation from their classroom. It is to be scheduled and done by the students in a whole class setting. Students may not use references. We don’t want them heavily relying on resources as this is an authentic assessment of their progress in writing English. Classroom teachers may not make any marks on the original TELPAS Writing Samples they submit. Students will write full name, ID #,& teacher name at the top, and the prompt should also be stated. The sample should be dated February 18 or later.

TELPAS Writing SGP 2013 Individual student folders will be in Ms. Howard’s office located in the counselor’s office. Writing Samples are to be filed during your conference period or after school. TELPAS samples are part of state mandated testing. The writing samples should be secure and confidential. Do not allow students to transport them. TEA Writing Sample Collection Window - Feb. 18 th – March 5 th. If you have writing samples collected from the first day (Feb 18) that is great as long as all guidelines have been followed. If you have questions or concerns regarding the collection of writing samples and procedures please see Ms. Howard or Mrs. Gomez.
