Typography Sculpture

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning). Font is an assortment or set of type or characters all of one style and sometimes one size.

(Luke Lucas) A freelance creative, art director, illustrator, designer and typographer living on the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia.

Learning Target: Decide on a font and word to create a 3D sculpture. Begin tracing on cardboard. Do the best you can to mimic the font you choose. Use pencil. Grab a ruler if you need one. If you mess up fix it. Get it to the best possible quality you are able to achieve. Cutting Demo This is going to be difficult, you will struggle and that is a good thing If you are using an exacto knife, make sure you have a mat underneath you. This is protecting our tables. Never cut towards your self with scissors. For exacto knifes if I see you misusing them… you no longer get to use them for the REST OF THE YEAR. Tips: Take a rolling pin and flatten down the card board. Alternate between scissors and the exacto knife. PACITENCE! Cut through the top layer, the middle slates and then through the bottom layer.

Painting! Key Things Use sheet of paper beneath your letters so that you don’t paint the table. Used brushes, need to be cleaned. COLD WATER Swirl them in your hand. Paint trays, cleaned and dried! Sinks need to be clean at end of class. If they can fit, place letters into your cubbie to dry. If they cannot, place them on the drying rack. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON THEM! I do not have all the colors of the rainbow… you may have to mix colors to make what you want. Learning Target: Finishing cutting out text and beginning painting letters. Essential Question: How can I use letters and font to create a 3D sculpture to convey an action, emotion, or adjective? Game Plan: 1.Do Now. 2.Painting Tips. 3.Finish cutting out text. 4.Painting letters. 5.Assembling text HW: $15 dollar art fee!

Tacky Glue It is not an instant adhesive though does get tacky quickly. Plan to hold, support, brace, etc… your letters to ensure they stay together. Don’t be stingy with this however don’t use gobs of it. It is water based so be careful how you use it around your letters if you have painted them already. Acrylic paint is also water based.
