Weird and Crazy Laws Baltimore It’s illegal to throw bales of hay from a second-story window within the city limits. It’s illegal to take a lion to the movies. It is a park rule violation to be in a public park with a sleeveless shirt. It is a violation of city code to sell chicks or ducklings to a minor within 1 week of the Easter holiday. Baltimore City Though you may spit on a city roadway, spitting on city sidewalks is prohibited. You may not curse inside the city limits.

Alabama It is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle. Dominoes may not be played on Sunday. It is illegal to wear a fake mustache that causes laughter in church. California Sunshine is guaranteed to the masses. Animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a tavern, school, or place of worship. Bathhouses are against the law. It is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game from a moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale. Women may not drive in a house coat.

Florida Women may be fined for falling asleep under a hair dryer, as can the salon owner. A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday or she shall risk arrest, fine, and/or jailing. If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to be paid just as it would for a vehicle. It is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit. Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown. It is illegal to skateboard without a license. Kansas Prohibits shooting rabbits from a motorboat.

Louisiana It is illegal to rob a bank and then shoot at the bank teller with a water pistol. Indiana Liquor stores may not sell milk. Michigan You may not swear in front of women and children in the state of Michigan. Nebraska It is illegal for bar owners to sell beer unless they are simultaneously brewing a kettle of soup.

New York A fine of $25 can be levied for flirting. This old law specifically prohibits men from turning around on any city street and looking "at a woman in that way." A second conviction for a crime of this magnitude calls for the violating male to be forced to wear a "pair of horse- blinders" wherever and whenever he goes outside for a stroll. A recently passed anticrime law requires criminals to give their victims 24 hours notice, either orally or in writing, and to explain the nature of the crime to be committed. The entire Encyclopedia Britannica is banned in Texas because it contains a formula for making beer at home. Wisconsin You must manually flush all urinals in a building. Butter substitutes are not allowed to be served in state prisons

3. Pick your favorite and write or draw something fictional that demonstrates a PROACTIVE or REACTIVE approach (or consequence) to this law. Examples: A funny short story, a public service announcement, a play or short film script, a letter home from jail, instructions to a friend on what to do (or what not to do), a comic, etc.

OBJECTIVE: The students will discuss and analyze the concept of proactive and reactive behavior in order to relate the effect of reaction to situations. DRILL: 1. What are the things that you can control? 2. What are things you can’t control?

Scenario 1: You overhear your best friend bad mouthing you in front of a group. She doesn’t know you overheard the conversation. Just five minutes ago, this same friend was sweet talking you to your face. You feel hurt and betrayed. Reactive Choices: oTell her off, then hit her. oGo into a deep depression because you feel so bad about what she said. oDecide that she’s a two-faced liar and give her the silent treatment for two months. oSpread vicious rumors about her. After all, she did it to you. Proactive Choices: oForgive her. oConfront her and calmly share how you feel. oIgnore it and give her a second chance. Realize that she has weaknesses just like you and that occasionally you talk behind her back without really meaning any harm.

Scenario 2: You’ve been working at your job in the store for over a year now and have been extremely committed and dependable. Three months ago, a new employee joined the crew. Recently he was given the coveted Saturday afternoon shift, the shift you were hoping for. Reactive Choices: oSpend half your waking hours complaining to everyone and their dog about how unfair this decision was. oScrutinize the new employee and find his every weakness. oBecome convinced your supervisor has formed a conspiracy and is out to get you. oBegin to slack off while working your shift. Proactive Choices: oTalk with your supervisor about why the new employee got the better shift. oContinue to be a hard working employee. oLearn what you can do to improve your performance. oIf you determine that you are in a dead end job, begin looking for a new one.

The difference Reactive People: oMake themselves victims. oAre easily offended. oBlame others. oGet angry and say things they later regret. oWhine and complain. oWait for things to happen to them. oChange only when they have to. Proactive People: oAre not easily offended. oTake responsibility for their choices. oThink before they act. oBounce back when something bad happens. oAlways find a way to make it happen. oFocus on things that they can do something about, and don’t worry about things they can’t. IT PAYS TO BE PROACTIVE!
