Part Two: Pages 129-173 129: “For the first time she’s on the other side of the glass and getting a taste of how it feels to be watched” This shows that.

Presentation transcript:

Part Two: Pages : “For the first time she’s on the other side of the glass and getting a taste of how it feels to be watched” This shows that at this point, the balance of power has changed— she’s the one being watched now!

Part Two: Page : “I’m just getting the full force of the dangers we let ourselves in for when we let McMurphy lure us out of the fog” Shows the repercussions of Chief raising his hand—this is why he didn’t want to be taken out of the “fog,” his comfortable place

Part Two: Page : “’We have weeks, or months, or even years if need be. Keep in mind that Mr. McMurphy is committed. The length of time he spends in this hospital is entirely up to us. Now, if there is nothing else…”’ Dramatic Irony—Mack of course doesn’t realize this until his talk with the lifeguard at the pool in the next chapter.

Part Two: Pages : Canada honkers going south for the winter […]Then they crossed the moon –a black, weaving necklace, drawn into a V by the lead goose” V symbolism???

Part Two: Page : “then I could hear a car speed up out of a turn. The headlights loomed over the rise and peered ahead down the highway. I watched the dog and the card making for the same spot of pavement” Dog=McMurphy; Car=Society

Part Two: Page “ At home she locks herself in the bathroom out of sight, strips down, and rubs that crucifix all over that stain running from the corner of her mouth in a thin line down across her shoulders and breasts. She rubs and rubs and hails Mary to beat thunder, but the stain stays […]It’s all our fault, and she’s going to get us for it” Symbolism: Women are representative of sin (Eve) and can never “wash stain” off their fates.

Part Two: 147 “ McMurphy must have been standing in a hole because he was having to tread water where I was just standing on the bottom” Shows that Chief sees McMurphy as a “larger than life” person—reference to later when Mack says he will make Chief “full size”

Part Two: Page 155 “Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Puts a man in one confounded bind, I’d say” Mack can’t win: if he rebels, he will be there too long; if he follows her orders, he will betray his freedom and independence.

Part Two: Page 158 “His hands can be anything. But as soon as the story’s finished he notices McMurphy and his wife are watching the hands, and he traps them between his knees. He laughs about this, and his wife says to him, “Dale, when are you going to learn to laugh instead of making that mousy little squeak?”’ Vera—how is she like Nurse Ratched?

Part Two: Page 165 “McMurphy doesn’t know it, but he’s onto what I realized a long time back, that it’s not just the Big Nurse by herself, but it’s the whole Combine, the nation-wide Combine that’s the really big force, and the nurse is just a high-ranking official for them” How does this compare to LOTF?

Part Two: Page 172 “ The glass came apart like water splashing, and the nurse threw her hands to her ears. He got one of the cartons of cigarettes with his name on it and took out a pack, then put it back and turned to where the Big Nurse was sitting like a chalk statue and very tenderly went to brushing the slivers of glass off her head and shoulders” Glass is a symbol of Nurse’s invisible but well-known power; Mack destroys her sense of total safety at the end of Part Two.

Part Three: Page 177 “Scanlon did it by accidentally bouncing our basketball through it before the whitewashed X was even dry” Now, others are beginning to break the invisible power of Nurse Ratched’s

Part Three: Page 187 “The Combine. It worked on him for years. He was big enough to fight it for a while […] It beats everybody, It’ll beat you too […] That’s why you shouldn’t of broke that window. They see you’re big now. Now they got o bust you.” Similarities between Chief’s dad and Mack?

Part Three: Page 202 “’Never before did I realize that mental illness could have the aspect of power, power” Irony—no power in ward

Part Three: Page 203 “As McMurphy led the twelve of us toward the ocean” Significance of the number?

Part Three: Page 203 “All up the coast I could see the signs of what the Combine has accomplished since I was last through this country, things like, for example—a train stopping at a station and machined hats, laying them like a hatch of identical insects” Combine= loss of individuality to conformity; Chief can see the affects of it in the towns.

Part Three: Page 212 “ I was off the boat, blown up off the water and skating the wind with those black birds, high above myself and I could look down and see myself and the rest of the guys, see the boat rocking there in the middle of those diving birds, see McMurphy surrounded by his dozen people, and watch them, us, swinging a laughter that rang out on the water in ever- widening circles, farther and farther, until it crashed up on the beaches all over the coast, on beaches all over all coasts, in wave after wave after wave”

Part Three: Page 214 “…but everybody was even more surprised that McMurphy hadn’t insisted that he be one of the heroes; all during the fuss he’d stood with his back against the cabin bracing against the pitch of the boat, and watched the guys without saying a word. Just grinning and watching” This shows that Mack is teaching them that they can gain empowerment (confidence and courage) themselves

Part Three: Page 218 “ Then—as he was talking—a set of tail- lights going past lit up McMurphy’s face, and the windshield reflected an expression that was allowed only because he figured it’d be too dark for anybody in the car to see, dreadfully tired and strained and frantic, like there wasn’t enough time left for something he had to do…” What is this foreshadowing? What would Mack be worried and frantic about? What is the important business?
