Agenda Introduction FYP Activities Calendar Undergraduate Project Management System Research based Project: UROP

Overview Students undertaking BSc in Computer Science (majoring) on the Fakulti Sains Komputer & Sistem Maklumat are required to undertake a final year project. The aim of the project is to ensure that the student can either successfully complete a large-scale software system; OR that they can deeply research an area of Computing.

Why do a project? Demonstrate depth of understanding of broad range of skills and knowledge Explore an idea, problem or area of study that is of special interest Gain an insight into the complexities of real-world problemsDevelop new skillsDemonstrate independent learning and self-management

FYP Phase The FYP is as it sounds; a two-semester-long project that evolves through two phases: the Proposal (Initial) – [PSM1] (SCJ/V/R/I/D/3032/SCB4042)Proposal At the end of each Phase cycle, you are also required to give a presentation of your work.presentation the Final Report & System Demo [PSM2] (SCJ/V/R/I/D/B/4134)Final Report 5

For the two phases of the project, it is important to realize that each is derived from the phase before it. Thus, there is a lot of thinking, planning, and writing involved in putting together the Proposal.Proposal The Final Report & System evolves from the Proposal & System Documentation. Work smart -- put time and effort into thinking and reading about your topic at the Proposal phase. 6

7  Students are required to attend classes two hours a week (for 8 weeks) conducted by a lecturer appointed by the faculty.  The presence of students in this lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to attend at least 80% of contact hours of lectures will be considered as FAILED.  SCD - MPD SCI - BK1 SCJ & SCB - BK2 SCR - BK3 SCV - BK4 FYP Lecture

FYP Management All activities related to FYP are manage by the Undergraduate Project Committee. Headed by Faculty FYP Coordinator and two representatives of each department‘s lecturers. 8

Research Project the correct use of the Scientific Method; using a well designed, defined and identified research method (qualitative, quantitative or a mixture of both); well-designed data collection and analysis critical analysis of their research process.

Requires

Project Idea gives the project a context explains why the project is important identifies what the FYP aims to accomplish and how identifies objectives identifies possible problems or complications 13

Example Example: Gaming, as both a cultural phenomenon and a lucrative global business [why the project is important], has enjoyed enormous success over the past five years. With this increase in popularity has come a demand for more sophisticated 3D modeling. [context] The push in the industry is for smoother, seamless graphics. [problem] For this project, we will design a software program intended to greatly enhance the capabilities of 3D Studio Max to produce more realistic graphics. [state what the proposal aims to accomplish and how] Think of your objectives as what you want to accomplish and what you need to learn [software packages, algorithms] –What is your project objective? –Describe the scope of your project –Describe how you are going to achieve your objective What are the problems that you will address and why? What are your goals? What can you deliver? What are the technical challenges and how do you plan to overcome these? 14

Use it to get to where you want to go! To Graduation and Beyond!
