Purpose ▫ Provide the BOD with recommendations that both identify and satisfy the needs of graduate student members FY12 Deliverables ▫ Recommend programs and services that should be offered for graduate student members at annual and region conferences and throughout the fiscal year FY13 BOD3 Deliverables ▫ Recommendation on graduate student leadership positions within SWE ▫ Recommended communications and branding targeted directly for engaging graduate students within SWE FY13 April 2013 Deliverables ▫ Recommend organization and structure of graduate student members and/or groups within SWE 3/22/13Graduate Student Task Force FY12 BOD4 Report Tasks and Deliverables

Recommendation on graduate student leadership positions within SWE

Section Level (Collegiate)Region Level Graduate Student Activities Liaison ▫ Any person in a section who is involved with or informed about graduate student activities  Ex: Grad Committee Chair, VP of Grad Activities, Grad Activities Coordinator, etc. ▫ Contact info should be reported in either quarterly RCR reports or annual EOY reports ▫ Crucial for building graduate community network Grad activities are not universal to all colleges and universities, so a grad leader is not required Regional Graduate Student Representative ▫ Serve on RCT ▫ Serve as network builder, knowledge source ▫ Piloted in multiple regions already ▫ Responsible for graduate programming at Region Conference  Grad programming at Region Conf were piloted this year Graduate Student Leadership

Charter a Graduate Student Involvement Committee to own, coordinate, and facilitate the programs and activities of graduate students in SWE Current Graduate Coordinators (GMC/elect, GPC/elect) may transition into Committee leadership GSIC Tasks and Deliverables Serve as a knowledge source for grad student involvement in SWE Lead communications for grad programs and activities ▫ All Together Newsletter, Blog, SWE Magazine, website, and listserv Coordinate graduate programming session(s) at each Regional Conference Coordinate graduate programming sessions at the Annual WE Conferences ▫ sessions/workshops, special research forums (e.g. NAE Grand Challenges Rapid Fire), and networking events Coordinate online graduate programming, including webinars Foster a strong community of graduate students, and increase the number of grad members Society Level

No specific branding is recommended aside from the proposed Graduate Student Involvement Committee name Branding of Graduate Student Programs, Services, etc.

OnlineWebinars, Modules, & Training Current blog should be maintained Listserv ▫ Reporting through section and regional graduate leadership is crucial for maintaining this list SWE Website ▫ swe.org/graduate ▫ Info on programs, services, activities, etc. ▫ Currently being worked by Graduate Coordinators Graduate leaders will continue to create graduate programming webinars Engage with CLCC to update modules and training to be inclusive of graduate students and activities ▫ Already discussed with CLCC Chairs and Deputy Chairs ▫ Major source of graduate/undergraduate leader dissent within a section arises from undergraduates not understanding graduate involvement in SWE Communications for Graduate Students

Purpose is to motivate sections to actively engage and embrace graduate student membership ▫ May help to resolve grad/undergrad leadership issues mentioned previously Proposed examples ▫ Individual Awards  Continue Graduate category of Outstanding Collegiate Member Award  Continue Graduate category of Technical Poster Competition  Award is based primarily on communication of technical information  Consider other graduate research excellence awards, possibly arising from Rapid Fire or similar research forum ▫ Section Awards  Graduate Recruitment Program Award  Graduate Programming/Prof Dev. Awards  Include optional graduate activities reporting sections in the Outstanding Collegiate Section Award reports Awards and Recognition for Graduate Activities
