The President’s Term Limit There was no term limit to the presidency until 1951 George Washington began a tradition of refusing to seek more than two terms. FDR broke the tradition and won a third and fourth term in 1940 and The 22 nd Amendment (passed in 1951) now sets a term limit of two terms or 8 years.
