 Theme: The message the author wishes to convey to the reader, that the reader can apply to their own life  Topic: One or two words that sum up what the story is about  Author’s Purpose: The reason the author is writing  Main Idea: The most important idea that the writer communicates  Topic Sentence: the sentence used to directly state the main idea

 Theme ◦ Written as a statement ◦ Something the author wants the reader to learn ◦ Something the reader can apply to their life  Ex. “The Golden Rule” Treat others as you want to be treated  Topic ◦ 1-2 words ◦ What the story is about  Ex. Friendship, Being Yourself

 Just remember: ◦ Theme and topic are used in fictional stories ◦ A main idea comes from non-fiction ◦ A topic sentence goes with main idea (non-fiction); not topics (fiction)
