5 What I do now  Language and social skills assessments  Groups- Pragmatics, CP group, Introduction to Assertiveness  Individual sessions  Co-facilitate psychology groups  Co- facilitate TC groups  Postgraduate Intermediate dysphagia course  Support nurses, SLT assistants and band 5

7 Not so good parts!  Stressful and you need tough skin!  Emotionally unstable and unpredictable client group  Have to gain knowledge through experience  Restrictions and security  Staff awareness of SLT in this area  Staff lack awareness- behavioural vs communication needs  At times difficult to see change within the client group  Challenging a lack of sense of hope

9 Top tips  Try to visit/ shadow other therapists in the field  Attend more general SLT training courses  Volunteer opportunities are useful to build up experience  Gain confidence as a therapist first and just being part of a team  Use regular supervision for clinical and managerial support

10 Why did I want to work in the criminal justice sector? Being an NQP  Previous background  Specific interest in the patient group  Personal development plan in developing my skills in forensic services  Increasing awareness of mental health and combating stereotypes  Rewarding
