FUSE D GLAS S

Fused glass is one of the easiest and most exciting techniques for working in glass. What is it? - Fusing is heating two or more pieces of glass in a kiln so that they melt together. - The temperature for melting glass is from 1350F to 1500F. What can you make? jewelry, plates, bowls, vases, coasters, sun catchers, clock faces, small windows and panels

FUSED GLASS Transferable Skills (what will this do for me even if I don’t become a glass artist?) Develop a unique visual language Strengthen conceptual development of ideas Apply art design principles Creativity Critical Thinking Problem Solving Resiliency and Persistence

FUSED GLASS The type of glass that we will use for fusing is very important. It has to be glass that won't break when it's heated up and cooled down in the kiln. Leftover bits from other projects will probably not be suitable for fusing. All the pieces have to be compatible with each other for successful fusing. The type of glass we use is Called 'Fusible Glass' In this class, we will use glass that is COE 90 (Coefficient of Expansion). It will expand at a certain rate – using only the same COE gives your glass a better chance to survive the fusing process.

TACK FUSE To keep the texture of added pieces of glass and frit, the work should be fired at the lower end of the fusing heat scale. This is called a 'tack fuse'.

FULL FUSE A higher temperature would be used if you wanted it smooth and all one level. This is called a 'full fuse'.

SLUMPING Allows previously fused pieces of glass, both tack and full, to be melted to take the shape of a mold in the kiln. Glass is placed on top of a mold in the kiln, and as it is heated is droops to take the shape of the mold

DRAPING Allows previously fused pieces of glass, both tack and full, to be melted to take the shape of a mold in the kiln. It is called "sagging" or "draping“ when the glass is placed on top of the mold and it flows over the outside of the shape.

FRIT “PAINTING” Creating a Design using a Glass ‘Canvas” and using frit (tiny bits of broken glass) and placing it to create an image. It will generally look very much like Impressionism

GET CREATIVE AND MIX IT UP A piece can be Tack Fused with both cut pieces of glass and frit, then Slumped

GET CREATIVE AND MIX IT UP A piece could be Full Fused and Draped

GET CREATIVE AND MIX IT UP A piece could also be added to something else.
