HOW MUCH IS A MILLION? Perspective Is Important

Briefcase Full of Money

How Much Money Will Fit? $50,000 $100,000 $250,000 $500,000 $1,000,000 $1,500,000 $2,000,000 $2,500,000 $3,000,000 In $50 bills In $100 bills Briefcase Dimensions: 18” x 13” 4.5” 45.7 x 33 x 11.4 cm

How Much Money Will Fit? $100,000 $250,000 $500,000 $1,000,000 $1,500,000 $2,000,000 $3,000,000 In $50 bills In $100 bills

How Tall is $1M? We’ve already figured out how thick any note of U.S. currency is: cm If we stacked 1 million bills on top of each other, how tall would our stack of money be? 109 m (~30 stories!) That’s the length of a football field and more than half the height of the Space Needle!

Estimation! 1. How much would 1 million weigh?? 2. Watch video: “How Much Does $1M Weigh?”How Much Does $1M Weigh 3. He estimated that 1 million dollar bills weighs about 900 kg (~2,000 lbs.) 4. How close is he? Let’s find out! 5. So even though estimation is not an “exact science” it is a pretty good tool to use when time is short.

How Much is 1 Million? Homework:  Choose an item of interest and quantify IN TWO WAYS what it would look like to have 1 million of that item.  Examples: How long is 1 million ____; How tall is 1 million _____; How heavy is 1 million _____; bring in 1 million of your item.  Show your work and provide an object of the same scale for reference/perspective  Examples: As tall as the Empire State Building; as massive as a blue whale; as long as 3 football fields.  DUE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Fermi Problems Enrico Fermi was famous for rapid estimations that were highly accurate We’re going to learn how to do these on our own!  First, some perspective: the scale of the universethe scale of the universe  Next, an example Fermi estimationexample Now, complete the cool down in your journals – we’ll go over the answer tomorrow in class
