Focus Q: Jan. 12 Read “Conducting Witch Hunts” on page 433. What is the main idea? List 3 supporting details about the main idea. Do #14 on review sheet

What you’ll learn…….Why…………. 1.Who was Henry VIII and why did the Church of England form? 2.How the Catholic Church reformed itself. 1.How far would you go to ensure that your wife gave you a son? 2.Do you have faith that people and institutions can change for the better?

An Explosion of Protestant Sects 1. New Protestant Sects begin ***Sects: religious groups that break away from an established religion*** Many follow the teachings of Luther, Calvin, or others Some have radical ideas like the Anabaptists

Anabaptists ***didn’t believe in infant baptism—too young to understand what it means to accept the Christian faith*** 1.Most are nonviolent, religiously tolerant 2.Are persecuted harshly ***Baptists, Mennonites, and Amish are part of Anabaptists religious ancestry***

Anabaptist women being thrown into a fire

How does this picture reflect Anabaptist’s beliefs?

The Church of England (Anglican Church) Begins 1.English King Henry VIII was against Protestantism at first , after 18 yrs. of marriage, Henry wants annulment (divorce) from Catherine 3.Pope says no—Henry is furious 4.Henry takes over the English church 1534—Act of Supremacy—Henry is head of Eng. Church—Anglican or Church of England

Henry VIII Catherine of Aragon (1 of 6 wives)

Anglican Church Gets Support 1.Henry confiscates Catholic convents, monasteries 2.Take their land and wealth 3.Gives some lands to nobles and other important citizens 4.Gets lots of support for the Church of England

A riddle for you….. What starts with E, ends with E, but only has one letter? Envelope….hhmmmmmm What do you get when you cross a karate expert with a pig? A porkchop!

The Catholic Reformation or Counter Reformation They know they need to get their house in order Must end corruption w/in the papacy 1530s, 1540s

The Council of Trent 1545 Pope calls Council of Trent ***Purpose: decide the direction reform should take*** Met on and off for 20 years 1.Salvation comes though faith, good works 2.Bible is a major source of religious truth, but not the only source 3.***Stiff penalties for corruption by clergy***

Widespread Persecution Catholics and Protestants are both intolerant of radical sects like: – Anabaptists – people they thought were witches – Jews

Conducting Witch Hunts tens of thousands (mostly women) were killed for witchcraft 2.Most were killed in areas of religious conflict: – German states, France, Switzerland ***why the persecution? Most people believed in witches and Christianity*** – They think there are witches who are in league w/ the devil – Most are social outcasts or midwives, herbalists

50,000 to 80,000 “Witches” killed

Impalement

Persecuting Jews—much pressure to convert In Italy, the early Renaissance was a good time for Jews Spain expelled Jews, not Italy ***1516—Venice forces Jews to live in a section of town—called a Ghetto*** Other Italian cities do to During the Reformation, restrictions on Jews increased
