In mainland Greece, you have the magnificent Meteora monasteries. The mountainous terrain of Greece is ideal for trekking, while Mt. Parnassus near Delphi offers opportunities for skiing. In the east, Greece's second biggest city of Thessaloniki is absolutely worth a visit. The city has many monuments most of them dating back to Byzantine times. When you plan a trip to Greece try to visit at least the capital Athens, a bit of the Peloponessos and one or two islands. You will then get a general idea of what this fascinating country has to offer. Athens is a great city with many interesting street fairs. The people of Greece were one of the earliest civilizations. Greece still has many ancient ruins, some over 4000 years old. Greece also has many medieval churches. This makes Greece a very popular tourist area. Greece is also well known for its sculptures, paintings, pottery, poetry and playwriting.

Greek cuisine is a Mediterranean cuisine, sharing characteristics with the cuisines of Italy, the Balkans, Turkey, and the Levant. Contemporary Greek cookery makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including poultry, rabbit and pork. Also important are olives, cheese, eggplant (aubergine), zucchini (courgette), and yogurt. Greek desserts are characterized by the dominant use of nuts and honey. Some dishes use filo pastry.

Olive oil Sugar Butter Salt Cucumbers

1) Baklava is possibly the most famous of Greek desserts. It is made from a sweet pastry and nuts. The dish has been claimed by many ethnic groups but it is believed to have originated from the Ottoman Empire. 2) Taramosalata often referred to as Taramas is a traditional Greek appetizer made from cured cod roe. The fish roe is mixed with breadcrumbs or mashed potato plus lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil. 3) Kalimari 4) Kleftico 5) Tzatziki

Food plays a large role in Greek culture, and Greek food plays a very large role in culinary tradition around the globe. In fact, Greek food is often cited as the prime example of Mediterranean cuisine. Greek food shares characteristics with the tastes of Italy and the Balkans, and makes heavy use of meat, cheese, bread and oil. Greek foods are fried, breaded, sautéed, simmered, boiled, braised, stewed, baked, roasted, grilled, poached, pickled, puréed, and preserved. Generally, they are not smoked in home cooking.

If you visit a Greek southern island (Creta, Cyprus, Rhodes, Poros, Castelroso, Santorini) you 'll have light breakfast (croissant, cheese pie,...), lunch (fish or vegetables), dinner (something light with greek wine). If you visit the north (Hepirus or Macedonia, Greece) you'll have more heavy suppers.
