Makerspaces

Makerspaces What is a Makerspace? Makerspaces, sometimes also referred to as hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. In libraries they often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and more. Source:

Makerspaces Makerspace in schools can include any or all of the following activities: Cardboard construction Prototyping Woodworking Electronics Robotics Digital fabrication Building bicycles and kinetic machines Textiles and sewing

Makerspaces Questions to Ask What subjects will be taught in the space? Which tools will be needed? Who are the students that will be using the space? When will the space be used? Where will the space be placed in the school? How will the space be built?

Makerspaces In Libraries Students have opportunities to explore their interests Learn to use new tools Develop creative projects Provides participatory learning.

Makerspaces In Libraries Open areas in libraries with tables/seating A technical workshop space containing: Musical instruments for audio recording Carpentry Tools 3D printer Computers with graphics Every library is different, depending on the amount of space that is available.

App Smashing

“App Smash” or “App Smashing” – term coined by Greg Kulowiec What is app smashing? Its simple following of a few basic steps: 1. Create content with one app 2. Created content with another app or apps 3. Merge content together (smashing) 4. Publish the content to the web

App Smashing Key Rules for Successful App Smashing The Camera Roll and other Albums in the Photos app act as the conduit to bring the resources for the project in and out of the various apps being used. Note: With some apps you can use Dropbox and/or Google Drive, but these apps are often not accessible from free apps. Keep a list of apps capable of smashing content and give students opportunities to learn the features of the apps on your list so they will be comfortable using them for app smashing.list of apps capable of smashing content After students have enough experience with the apps on your list, leave the app choices to your students as much as possible.
