Convection Current Learning Target:I can identify the Earth’s layers and their properties. I will be able to use this information to predict changes on the Earth’s surface. The purpose of this is to understand why we have earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mid-ocean ridges and mountains. Classwork: Causes of Plate Movement article, class participation Homework:None

Use your shoulder partner to play the game.

Density A measurement of how much mass there is in a volume of a substance.

Asthenosphere The soft layer in the Earth’s upper mantle on which the lithosphere floats

Lithosphere The layer of the Earth made up of the crust and the rigid rock of the upper mantle, which is broken up into tectonic plates

Energy In physics, energy is a property of objects which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms, but cannot be created or destroyed.

Thermal Energy Thermal energy is the energy that comes from heat. This heat is generated by the movement of tiny particles within an object. The faster these particles move, the more heat is generated.

Plate Tectonics The theory that pieces of Earth’s lithosphere (lid or the solid top part of the earth) are in constant motion driven by convection currents within the mantle.

Convection Current The movement of fluid, caused by difference of temperature, that transfers heat (energy) from one part of the fluid to another.

Convection Current

Question:What makes the Earth’s Tectonic Plates move? Claim:The Earth’s tectonic plates move due to thermal energy creating convection currents in the asthenosphere. Some people believe that Earth’s tectonic plates don’t move at all. Use evidenced-based phrases citing the “Causes of Plate Movement” article to support the claim.

Convection Current Learning Target:I can calculate the density of substances and predict why and how they will interact with other substances. Classwork: Density & Interactions of substances Homework:Daily Catch Summary

Convection Current Learning Target:I can calculate the density of substances and predict why and how they will interact with other substances. Read the article on your desk to answer the warm-up question… use evidence based phrases.

Correct your daily catch summary for Wednesday… Today you calculated density, what is another real life example where you see density ?

Learning Target I can calculate the density of substances and predict why and how they will interact with other substances.

What is Density?

What two properties are needed? Mass & Volume

What is mass?

What is volume?

What does density actually tell you about a substance? The arrangement of the molecules within the substance… how close the molecules are..

What does density have to do with the earth?

What does density have to do with convection current?

So, lets figure out how to calculate density and predict why and how substances will interact.

Triple beam balance

What are you measuring on a triple beam balance? Mass Mass is the amount of matter/atoms

Density calculation

Convection Current The movement of fluid, caused by difference of temperature, that transfers heat (energy) from one part of the fluid to another.

Besides the layers of the Earth, where else can we see convection currents?

Does convection current happen in the weather?

What do you need to make fluids flow? Do you think convection current happens in the oceans?
