Key vocabulary of the week Extinction Inner core Outer core Tectonic plate Lithosphere Convection currents Review: Erosion Weathering Deposit Transport

Key vocabulary of the week Term: extinction Definition: the state or situation that results when something (such as a plant or animal species) has died out completely Draw:

Key vocabulary of the week Term: outer core Definition: a liquid layer composed of iron and nickel located above the Earth's inner core and below its mantle Term: inner core Definition: the mostly solid ball in the innermost part of the Earth (believed to consist of an iron–nickel mixture)

Key vocabulary of the week Term: lithosphere Draw: Definition: is the rigid (solid) outermost shell of a rocky planet Origin: from lithos = "rocky" and sphaira = "sphere" “ball’)

Key vocabulary of the week Term: tectonic plates Definition: the Earth’s sub-layers that move, float, and sometimes fracture (this causes continental drift, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and oceanic trenches) Related term Plate tectonics: the study of the structure of the Earth and how the Earth's surface changes according due to the movement of tectonic plates Draw:

Key vocabulary of the week Term: convection current Definition: the transfer of heat when heated particles move into cooler places (happens only in liquids and gasses) Draw:

Meet someone who speaks your language and… Explain your definitions & drawings using your native language for these words: Extinction Inner core Outer core Tectonic plate Lithosphere Convection currents Also make sure you understand these words: Erosion Weathering Deposit Transport

At home 1. Study the words while thinking about the images that best describe/represent the word

TUESDAY 1. Whole class review (calling on volunteers) 2. Picture match 3. Homework: a. Spelling pyramid b. Write 1-2 sentences using the words from the spelling pyramid + sentence frames
