What do you know about animals? People use animals in these ways: As food: milk, meat, egg, honey For clothing: wool,leather,skin,furs For entertainment: circus In science: scientific tests.

This shows an elephant in a circus.

This shows a monkey In a small cage, perhaps at a zoo.

Nowadays, more and more products are tested on animals, do you agree? If not, why?

Try to think of a situation that you are against animal testing, discuss it.

Can you name a kind of shop that doesn’t test products on animals? The body shop.

What is the body shop? A global business selling simple products for the skin and hair.

Can you find the difference between Body Shop and other cosmetic companies: The body shop The other cosmetic companies

1)Test some products on animals. 2) Packaging may double the cost of a product. 3) Spend millions on advertising. 4) Try to sell you dreams \false promises. 5) Main aim is to make money\profits. Skimming and scanning: 1.What is the Body Shop? A global business. 2. What does The Body Shop sell? Cosmetics. 3. What is the link between The Body Shop and animals? The Body Shop only sells products not tested on animals.

The Body Shop Describe its products in simple,truthful language Thinks packaging is unimportant. Does not spend any money on advertising. Supports pro-environment campaigns/ cause.

Other cosmetic companies Promise to make you look younger and more beautiful. Use persuasive and expensive advertising campaigns. Present products in expensive packaging, often doubling the cost. Test many cosmetic products on animals.

More questions: 1.What kind of hope does the cosmetics industry bring to women? That they will be made younger and more beautiful, and that all their dreams will come true. 2. How do most cosmetic companies publicize their products? They publicize their products through persuasive and expensive advertising campaigns.

3. What two things make cosmetics more costly? a: The advertising campaigns to sell them. b: Their expensive packaging. 4. Why did Anita Roddick use simple, truthful language to explain her products? She thought it was immoral to make false promises about the qualities of her cosmetics.

5. In what manner did Anita Roddick promote The Body Shop to the public? Anita attracted wide publicity by explaining her views and later by holding pro- environment campaigns. 6. What did Anita Roddick train her staff to do? She taught them to believe that profits, although important, are not the only aim of a business.

Para1: The cosmetics industry sells dreams with persuasive and expensive advertising and expensive packaging. Para2: It tests some products on animals to make sure they are safe. Para3: The Body Shop, started by Anita Roddick in 1976, is different from other cosmetic companies in many ways, yet is very successful. Para4: Anita explained her products honestly.

Para5: She did not use expensive packaging. She believed in recycling. Para6: She refused to use products which had been tested on animals. Para7: She did not spend money on advertising. She encouraged her staff to take part in environmental campaigns.

Strategy: Understanding the writer’s viewpoint: A writer’s viewpoint refers to what he or she thinks about a certain topic. This viewpoint is shown by the kind of words the writer uses. For example, in the brochure, the writer uses very strong and positive words such as amazing, unconventional, revolutionize and remarkably to describe Anita Roddick. From this, we can infer that the writer admired Anita Roddick and the causes she pursued.
