Keeping up (with) standards PPA Sustainability Summit 2015

Hot topics – new standards Just released last month: ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015 Both now use new High Level Structure for better integration In progress: ISO – occupational health and safety Inspired by OHSAS Will fit neatly into management systems suite Almost at DIS stage; due for publication in October 2016 New wood traceability standard in progress: ISO Chain of custody for wood and wood-based products now at consultation; due for publication in May 2017

Hot topics – energy ESOS – the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme – has raised awareness of energy and energy standards Several standards are linked to ESOS: ISO certification is one of the routes to compliance Other standards can help with carrying out the energy audits, including: ISO – energy audits – general requirements BS EN – energy audits – general requirements BS EN – energy audits – buildings and many others…

ISO and energy The revised standard - also a good tool for energy management: Requirements for: Objectives to be measurable (if practical) and monitored Use of indicators Analysis and evaluation of results of monitoring and measuring

Finding more standards BSI Sustainability Navigator to find standards for: Sustainable eventsResponsible sourcingSustainable procurement Sustainable communitiesSustainable materialsSustainable film Energy managementEnergy generation and distribution Water management Waste managementSoil and land managementAir quality Social responsibilityBiodiversityEnvironmental management systems Eco-designEnvironmental performance evaluation Environmental auditing Greenhouse gas assessmentGreenhouse gas reductionGreenhouse gas offsetting Greenhouse gas communicationsEnvironmental technologiesFood Sustainable transport and logistics New technologies and innovationwww.bsigroup.com/en- GB/Sustainability-Standards- Navigator/

What’s new in ISO 14001:2015? New structure – to be common for all management system standards More outward looking: Not just how your business affects the environment, but also how it affects/can affect/will affect your business Greater focus on value chain: what you buy and what you sell Greater focus on interested parties More ‘core’: To be integrated into business processes To look at related business risks and opportunities More accountability

PPA activities to help: Paper and forests Plastic wrapping Covermounts Carbon footprinting Recycling And next…

And now: Inks and glues guidelines - because: Current disconnect between new production technologies and recycling loop Circa 95% still offset litho and gravure printed New technologies can’t yet be deinked in the same system Certain finishes, adhesives, wrapping and covermounts can cause problems Need to forestall problems in the magazines recycling loop Only a concern in large quantities – overs, rejects etc – not in the usual kerbside mix

The problems caused:

Inks and glues guidelines To be published shortly Developed in conjunction with UK paper-mills Specific to magazines – including inserts Summarise current issues What to do: Work with printers, mailing houses and advertisers supplying inserts For items printed or finished with certain processes, arrange for any large quantities of overs or rejects to be segregated and clearly labelled Read and follow PPA guidelines for covermounts and polywrapping

Thank you!
