THE CRISIS IN EDUCATION CIRCLE IN KANO By Musa Balarabe Musa, Bsc, M.sc, Community Mobilization and Gender Specialist.

The situation of schools in Kano Only 10% of children in public primary schools can read, write and do simple maths Most public school teachers do not keep proper lesson plan and other child records 75% of our primary school teachers are unqualified or incompetent to teach

The situation continued….. Insufficient teachers in rural schools and over staffing in urban schools There are more than 100 pupils per class in 8 metropolitan LGAs Two third of classrooms in the state have no furniture Half of the classrooms in the state need emergency renovation

The situations continue….. Monitoring and assessment of schools and teachers’ performance by SUBEB and LGEAs is not effective due to non implementation of reports by the relevant authorities. There is gross under funding and underutilization of basic education Federal and development partners’ funds are not regularly sourced for.

Introduction continued….. Most community members and teachers’ are not committed to education (western) Social activities divert children’s attention from learning Most school environments are not conducive to learning while some do not have the land for permanent structures. Education sector staff welfare / motivation is very low

The situation continued…….. Unhealthy competition between public and private schools Different approach and strategies adopted by IQTE schools Media not carrying out deeper investigation and broadcast on education Some CSOs/NGOs pay lip service and unrealistic support to education problems solution due to insufficient funds and skills

The situation continued……. Many instructional materials provided are insufficient and sometimes irrelevant to our environment No regular training, re training and development programmes to teachers, school administrators and supervisors and those who attend do not step down what they learnt to others

The situation continued…….. Need for more schools for new communities and settlements in need Trespass and land encroachment on school lands Many children with special needs but no plan to provide them with education Extracurricular activities neglected in schools

The situation continued……….. Poor enrolment, retention and completion of Girls up to JSS 3 What is expected of you as a community member? And what do you think you can do to improve the situation, education in primary school is the foundation of all education, and requires the contribution of all.

The situation contd….. Thank you for your time and contribution.
