Road Map What is goal line technology? Why is it needed? Famous occurrences of missed calls Four different types of goal line technology Wrap-up/Conclusion
What is goal line technology? A method used to determine when the ball has completely crossed the goal line with the assistance of electronic devices and at the same time assisting the referee in calling a goal or not.
Why is it needed? Disallowed goals have negatively impacted big games It would make referee’s calls easier It would eliminate controversial goals
Famous Occurrences 2000 African Cup of Nations Manchester United vs Tottenham in 2005 2009 Crystal Palace vs Bristol City 2010 World Cup: England vs Germany 2011 FA Cup: Chelsea vs Tottenham
Goal Line Technologies
Goal Minder Founded by Harry Barnes and Dave Parden Uses cameras that are mounted on the goal posts Only gave visual evidence Cheapest of the four goal line techs
GoalMinder: Pros and Cons Very inexpensive No digging up of the pitch Cons: Only works with visible balls Takes up to 5 seconds
Cairos GLT System Cairos Technologies Uses four major components Magnetic Field Sensors Receivers Referee
Cairos: Pros and Cons Pros: Cons: Returns signal in 1/10 of a second Ball doesn’t have to be visible 99.9% correct Cons: Only compatible with Adidas balls
GoalRef Founded by Peter Mikelson Very similar to the Cairos System Uses same magnetic field sensors Coils are added to goal frame Creates a “light curtain” within the net Sensors are placed between inner ball and leather
GoalRef: Pros and Cons Pros: Cons: Instant verification to referee Ball can be hidden Can be used with any ball Cons: Not great for TV
Hawk-Eye First developed in 1999 by Paul Hawkins Already in use during tennis and cricket matches Uses six high speed cameras to triangulate the ball Produces a graphical image of the flight path
Hawk-Eye: Pros and Cons Graphical image for TV Cons: Ball has to be 25% visible High installation costs
Conclusion Goal line tech will drastically help officials Eliminate missed calls that affect the game Use magnetic fields and cameras GoalRef and Hawk-Eye are the two best candidates
