What causes tourist trends to change?

Objectives:   Know what factors influence tourist trends   Understand that Thailand’s tourist industry grew and declined for a number of reasons   Be able to research tourist trends for one destination

Starter:   Look at the graph of trends and think about what caused the trends in Thailand.

Reasons why tourism trends in general have changed   S- Shorter working week   L- longer official holidays- more disposable income   A- Ageing population, grey tourism SAGA, early retirement   P- Package Holidays, accommodation/travel/transfers/food   W- Weather, guaranteed sun,sea and sand   A- Advertising, holiday programmes, magazines, videos, news papers, word of mouth   C- Communications, internet, lastminute.com, wide bodied jets   C- Cheapness, accessible finance, credit card, buy now pay later deals

Main reasons for tourism decline Terrorism   October Bali bomb in Kuta   September 11 th Destruction of the Twin Towers Natural disasters   Boxing day Tsunami 2006 (300,000 ppl dead)   30 % decline in tourist numbers for January 2005 compared to 2004.
