Part III: Reading Teaching Pre-reading questions Grammar: active/ passive voice Translation

Pre-reading questions Q1. Well goes the saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Try to give an example of this saying.

Q2: There are the lines from the movie First Knight, “A man fears nothing means he loves nothing. If a man loves nothing, what kind of joys of his life?” Do you agree or disagree on this idea? Why?

(1) The MV Story The MV story happened in Taichung, Taiwan. It is about a woman, Carolyn who had a dream about going abroad to see the world beyond Taiwan. She couldn’t do it until her children had grown up. When the day came, she went to America with her two children but without her first daughter and husband. They loved each other very much but for some reason he could not go with her; time and distance, however, did not seem to lesson her husband’s missing and loving her. They had a long time friend, who was a violin teacher and musician. Mr. Lee knew his friend’s circumstances very well. He didn’t like to see his friend so unhappy in the thoughts of missing his family, so he composed a song and took photos for them. Every scene was supposed to make Carolyn homesick enough to fly to her husband. Here are the song lyrics in the MV, “Love Lies in Taking Each Other to Heart.”

Post-reading Questions Q1: Why couldn’t Carolyne go abroad until her children had grown up?

Critical Thinking Do you think a woman is supposed to give up her own dreams and ideals to plunge into her family once she got married with kids? Why? Or why not?

Q2: What motivates the violin teacher to compose this song?

Critical Thinking If you were Carolyne, do you think Mr. Lee is a true friend to you? Why? Or why not?

Grammar : Voice Teaching

To love or to be loved Some say, “To love is sort of happiness.” While Others say, “To be loved is sort of happiness.” Would you like to love or to be loved ? Why?

Active Vs. Passive To love someone means you are active to love the one that you love. To be loved means you are passive to be loved by the one that loves you.

Why use the passive voice 1. When the agent of the action is unknown 2. When the agent is unimportant 3. When the agent of the action is obvious from the context 4. To emphasize (put importance on) the recipient (receiver) of the action 5. To connect ideas in different clauses more clearly 6. To make generic statements, announcements, and explanations

1. When the agent of the action is unknown My iPad was stolen two weeks ago. We don’t know who stole my iPad.

2. When the agent is unimportant The Information Technology Building of Chungming Senior High School will be completed in next semester. The people who build the building are unnecessary information for the meaning of the sentence.

3. When the agent of the action is obvious from the context The poor baby boy who was born last week desperately needs a new heart to transplant. Everyone knows that it was his mother bore him last week.

4. To emphasize (put importance on) the recipient (receiver) of the action Only Mariah was injured in the gunshot incident; the rest of the kids were dead. We want Maria to be the subject of the sentence and at the beginning to emphasize her importance and how lucky she was.

5. To connect ideas in different clauses more clearly The speaker was being played too loud by the lecturer, who was finally asked to turn it down. In this sentence, the clause “who was finally asked to turn it down” near the main clause makes the sentence’s meaning clearer.

6. To make generic statements, announcements, and explanations Kids have to be disciplined at school. Actions should be taken on gun control in America. It is said that typhoons often happen in summer. These three sentences are to make generic statements, announcements, and explanations.

The Pattern of Active and Passive Voices Pattern of active voice: S + Vt + O ( 主動語態 ) Pattern of passive voice: S + be + PP + by + O( 被動語態 )

Active Passive Florists grow flowers. Flowers are grown by florists.

Passive Active Miracle Cure is recommended by doctors. (Passive) Doctors recommend Miracle Cure. (Active)

Examples of Active and Passive Voices ActivePassive Scientist will discovered a cure for AIDS someday. A cure for AIDS will be discovered by scientists someday. People grow rice in southern Taiwan. Rice is grown in southern Taiwan. David mailed the package. The package was mailed by David. The police have investigated the suspect of the murder. The suspect of the murder has been investigated by the police.

Voice Test Please figure it out whether the sentence belongs to active or passive voice.
