Welcome to the Off-Campus Work-Study Experience at Charleston Southern University!

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is funded by the Federal Government and distributed by Financial Aid - listed on student’s award letter A mandatory percentage FWS funds must be used in service or literacy activities directed to the local community Business Partners of The Career Center host off-campus work study students in various positions that provide service to the community The Career Center will serve as your supervisor of record, payment is made through the Student Employment department, Hunter Reception Center Off-Campus Work-Study students are representatives of Charleston Southern University Off-Campus Federal Work Study Defined

The Career Center is the Coordinating Department for Off-Campus Federal Work-study Resources: Online career assessments, resources, and guides, including the BucCareer Network Résumé, cover letter, & grad essay critiques Interviewing preparation and mock interview practice Graduate school essay critiques and eBook library Career & graduate school preparation Recruitment & major-related events Computer lab – fax – print – coffee The Career Center Resources Dr. Hester Young Director & Assistant Dean of Student Services Amanda Tucker Career Advisor

Finding a Position & Scheduling Interviews 1.View the list of Off-Campus Federal Work-Study jobs on the BucCareer Network, located at Log in and select Student Employment positions from the position type 2.Identify a site position for which you are qualified – keep in mind the location and hours of operation of the desired site 3.Update a draft of your résumé if you haven’t already. You will take your approved résumé to the interview. 4.Call the site supervisor to determine availability for the semester 5. Provide your name and tell the site supervisor that you are a student at CSU participating in the Federal Work-Study program, discuss availability, arrange an interview I F FOR ANY REASON YOU HAVE NOT CONFIRMED AN INTERVIEW DATE WITHIN 2 DAYS, PLEASE CONTACT THE C AREER C ENTER FOR ASSISTANCE

For the interview: Dress nicely regardless of the position Take your résumé with you Be on time! During the Interview: Provide your Availability Form to your supervisor with your current contact information, noting the times you will be able to work Establish a schedule for the term if applicable Complete your Placement Form for submission The Career Center Securing a Position

1.Placement Form – identify a site and submit to the Career Center within one week after the orientation. 2.Liability Release Form – submit with Placement Form 3.Availability Form – complete and submit to your site supervisor 4.Contract – to be completed with Student Employment AFTER PLACEMENT 1.Submit your timesheet to your site supervisor – on the last day of each month worked, your supervisor will confirm and submit your hours to us. You may use the timesheet in your packet [also found on the BucCareer Network under Resources], the organization’s timesheet, or print your electronic timesheet from the CSU website. 2.Submit you Electronic Timesheet – once approved by your site supervisor, completed and submit on the last day of each month. Required Documents

Do’s  Read the Student Employment Handbook Complete all required paperwork prior to working Dress appropriately for the interview Respect supervisors, fellow staff members and clients Complete assignments; ask questions to ensure accuracy and understanding Notify your supervisor of schedule changes or vacations Call your supervisor if you will be late or unable to report to work Be prompt, positive, and professional on the job ENTER YOUR TIME DAILY AS YOU WORK to ensure accurate accounting of hours Off-Campus Student Employment Expectations  Don’ts Do not use computers, equipment, or supplies for personal use Do not use your cell phone unless your job requires it Do not allow friends or family to visit you at work Do not forget to SIGN your electronic timesheet on the last day of the month Do not forget to submit your hours to your site supervisor on the last day of the month

Remind your supervisor at least two weeks prior to the end of your contract Discuss returning to the same position with your site supervisor and inform the The Career Center Your site supervisor will complete a performance evaluation with you for your career development You will be asked to complete a site evaluation Ending Your Contract & Evaluations

Concerns or Conflicts If you have difficulties at your site, with fellow employees, or site partners, your first line of contact should be your site supervisor. After communication with your supervisor and the problem persists, or the issue is of a personal nature, contact The Career Center Dr. Hester Young Amanda Tucker
