5.2 Frequency Tables, Histograms, and Frequency Polygons Goal: Create frequency tables and graphs from sets of data.

Example #1 Flooding is a regular occurrence in the Red River Basin. During the second half of the 20 th century, there hace been 9 notable floods, four of which have been severe, occurring in 1950, 1979, 1996, The flood that occurred in 1997 is known as the “flood of the century” in Manitoba and North Dakota. The data on the next slide represents the flow rates of the Red River from 1950 to 1999, as recorded at the Redwood Bridge in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Example #1

Using the data given, determine the water flow rate that is associated with serious flooding by creating a frequency distribution. Frequency Distribution – a set of intervals (table or graph), usually of equal width, into which raw data is organized; each interval is associated with a frequency that indicates the number of measurements in this interval. Should have a minimum of 5, to a maximum of 12, intervals.

Example #1 Histogram - the graph of a frequency distribution, in which equal intervals are marked on a horizontal axis and the frequencies associated with these intervals are indicated by the areas of the rectangles drawn for these intervals. Frequency Polygons – the graph of a frequency distribution, produced by joining the midpoints of the intervals using straight lines.

Example #2 The magnitude of an earthquake is measured using the Richter scale. Examine the histograms for the frequency of earthquake magnitudes in Canada from 2005 – Which of these years could have had the most damage from earthquakes? Before looking at histograms, need to understand what type of damage is related to magnitude on Richter Scale.
