THE COORDINATE PLANE 1-10
VOCABULARY Intersect – to cross or divide something Coordinate Plane – what is formed by the intersection of 2 number lines Axes – the 2 number lines of the Coordinate Plane
Axes… The lines that intersect are called axes. The horizontal number line is called the x-axis The vertical number line is called the y-axis
The 4 Quadrants The x- and y- axes divide the Coordinate Plane into 4 Quadrants: x y 0 Quadrant I Quadrant II Quadrant III Quadrant IV Quadrants count counter- clockwise
The Origin 0 is the origin, or the starting point of the intersection. When we work with the Coordinate Plane, we work with 2 number lines. 0 x y
Ordered Pairs An Ordered Pair gives the exact coordinates, or location, of one particular point. Ordered Pairs are always written in this form: P: (x-coordinate, y-coordinate)
Ordered Pair Example P: (-5, 4) x-coordinatey-coordinate 0 x y Step 1 – You must go to the x-axis and find your x- coordinate Step 2 – You must go to the y-axis and find your y- coordinate Step 3 – You must connect the 2 numbers you have. The intersection is your point. P: (-5, 4)
Helpful Hints… Here’s some hints to use when figuring out what Quadrant your point will be found in. x y III IIIIV (+, +)(-, +) (-, -)(+, -)
