Information Networks

Internet It is a global system of interconnected computer networks that link several billion devices worldwide. It is an international network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.

Internet The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), the infrastructure to support , and networks for file sharing and telephony.

Website A website is a collection of linked files called web-pages. The WebPages of a website contain text, pictures and other elements of related information.

Website is a set of related web pages typically served from a single web domain. A website is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a network such as the Internet or a private local area network through an Internet address known as a Uniform resource locator.

HTML Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML) is made up of code consisting of tags that define how web pages look. A software package called a browser translates the HTML tags into a final product-a web page.

Web Browser A Web Browser is application software installed into computers to enable users to access web pages / web sites. Examples of web browsers include; internet explorer, mozilla firefox, netscape navigator etc….

Web Server A web server is a location/computer where a website is stored physically. Web servers serve requests of web pages from web browsers.

WWW WWW-World Wide Web Is the world’s repository of information and contains information contained on all websites

What's the relationship between the WWW and the Internet? The World Wide Web is just one of the many services that the Internet provides. Some other services provided by the Internet are , FTP, gopher, telnet and usenet. FTPgopher usenet , for exchange of electronic mail messages. USENET newsgroups, for posting and responding to public "bulletin board" messages. File Transfer Protocol (FTP), a system for storing and retrieving data files on large computer systems. Gopher, a method of searching for various text-based Internet resources (largely obsolete). TELNET, a way of connecting directly to computer systems on the Internet.

URL Universal Resource Locator or Uniform Resource Locator. It is a string that supplies the internet address and protocol of a website or resource on the world wide web. E.g ftp://downloads.dell.com

Hyperlink A hyperlink is a pointer from a piece of text or an image to page or other type of file on the world wide web.

Protocol Protocols are a set of rules and procedures that a used by computers on a network to communicate. E.g HTTP, FTP,

TCP/IP Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol It is the set of rules that computers follow to share data

HTTP Hyper Text Transfer Protocol This a protocol used to transfer WebPages (hypertext documents and data) through the world wide web.

FTP File Transfer Protocol. It is used to send and receive files from a remote computer.

ISP Stands for Internet Service Provider. They are companies who provide you with Internet access (for example UTL,MTN or INFOCOM).

LAN A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, or office building, using network media

WAN A wide area network (WAN) is a network that covers a broad area (it links across metropolitan, regional, national or international boundaries). Business and government entities utilize WANs to relay data among employees, clients, buyers, and suppliers from various geographical locations.

MAN A metropolitan area network (MAN) is computer network larger than a local area network, covering an area of a few city blocks to the area of an entire city, possibly also including the surrounding areas

Intranet An intranet is a computer network that uses Internet Protocol technology to share information, operational systems, or computing services within an organization over a LAN

Extranet An extranet is a computer network that allows controlled access from outside of an organization's intranet or over the internet

Social Media Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. Social media is defined as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.

Social Media social media depend on mobile and web- based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co- create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between organizations, communities, and individuals.
