Journal Entry 1/20 LT: Students will learn foundations of Texas Revolution Historic social/cultural moments often stick with us for a lifetime. We remember where we were and what we were doing when it occurred. For me this is the attacks on the trade towers on September 11th. What is a specific cultural/social moment that sticks out to you? Describe what the event was, where you were and why that event stands out to you?

Why does all this matter?

What is civic pride? What impact does civic pride have on a city or region? Why does it matter?

Why is Texas called the Lone Star State?

Gag Rule 1836 – House of Representatives refused to discuss any new petitions against slavery (repealed in 1844) Southerners did everything possible to stop abolitionism in South

John Tyler’s Presidency Became President when William Henry Harrison died in 1841 Favored annexing Texas –Wanted land for expansion –Feared Texas allying with England or France –Failed because northerners did not want more slave territory
