Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with the Christian triduum of Hallowmas: All Hallows' Eve, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.[1][2]Hallowmas: All Hallows' Eve, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.[1][2] Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased. Jose Guadalupe Posada Modern Day of the Dead folk art is largely influenced by the work of Mexican press artist, Jose Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900s. Posada depicted both the rich and the humble as skeletal caricatures going about daily business. His aim was to illustrate that all people, great or small, eventually reach equality in death. One figure in particular, dressed in a plumed hat and fancy dress and known as "Katarina," is popular and present on many home altars. Catarina
