Community Resource Project By Hannah Patterson

Winford’s Life Family Situation - Father - Mother - 3 Children 1. 6 year old 2. 3 year old 3. 6 month old Family Assets - Both Parents employed at essentially minimum wage jobs. Father’s benefits provide limited health insurance for the 3 children. Parents work odd shifts including weekends, so the family has little “routine”. Both have family nearby and are closely connected to them.

Situation The parents are very concerned about the six month old’s physical development; she seems to be very much slower than her older siblings. At six months she cannot sit up by herself and cannot always raise and keep her head up when upright. The family has no primary care physician for the child, or a medical home. What can the family do to find out if there is a developmental concern with their daughter? What happens if there is?

Suggestions Winford - AR Kids - TEFRA - Medicaid - Therapy - Steudlein Family - Job Schedules (Day/Night) - Mid-South Community College - Wick - Daycare Employment

Insurance Options Medicaid- Provides health coverage for more than 43 million children. This includes half of all low-income children in the United States. Medicaid - Benefits: All children covered are entitles to (EPSDT) Early, Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment. This is a comprehensive set of healthcare services. TEFRA- Insurance for children with disabilities whose parents have too much income to qualify for other health programs or for those who qualify but the cost would be too high. TEFRA AR Kids- This is a Medicaid for children that offers many different benefits. This insurance is focused towards low-income families. AR Kids

Where? Insurance must be applied for. Health Department of Crittenden County - Address: 901 N. 7th St. West Memphis, AR Phone Number:

Procedure If they qualify for any insurance they have to get a primary care physician (PCP). - Medicaid requires an assigned PCP The PCP will write a referral to a therapy company. The child will go to an evaluation and the rest is left up to the therapist. Therapy would be paid for under AR Kids and Medicaid.

Therapy Company Goode Therapy Services - Physical, Occupational, and Speech Address: 210 Manor Street. Marion, AR Phone:

An Education Option Steudlein Learning Center is a daycare and preschool in West Memphis that is paid for by Medicaid for children who have two or more developmental delays. - Therapists are on site at this school to facilitate children who need therapy on a regular schedule.

Saving Money WIC- This is a short term program for low-income families that have young children. It provides assistance with nutrition and health items, such as food and health care providers. WIC The mother could get a job at a daycare center that has a better schedule. This may also reduce the families cost in child care. - For example, In Goode Hands’ employees pay half of the cost of regular tuition for their children. This is a general rule.

Routine Options Parents could take different shifts. -Mom works days - Dad works nights This will allow for a more structured home environment and more time with the children. The mom could take a job at a daycare to save on tuition for childcare and she would be able to see her children more.
