Overview Social work and psychology - related, but distinct, fields Social work: therapeutical services with a focus on social engagement and the securement of practical needs Psychology: scientific study of how humans and animals behave There are three primary concentrations in social work: macro (or indirect) services, direct services and clinical There are two primary concentrations in psychology: clinical and research

Types of Social Work Macro (or indirect) social workers focus on the big picture, attempting to effect change not in an individual but in a community or organization Direct social workers provide assistance with employment, legal issues, or individual and/or family counseling for those without diagnosed mental health disorders Clinical social workers provide assistance with employment, legal issues, or individual and/or family therapy for those diagnosed with mental health disorders

Types of Psychologists Clinical psychologists = very similar to clinical social workers, but focus is on behaviors instead of social skills or relationships Research psychologists = experiments and scientific research on human and animal behaviors

Advanced Search

Searching Tips – Boolean Operators Use Boolean Operators to search for more than one word AND: use this to find articles where subjects intersect (decrease retrieval) OR: use this to create a larger set of related subjects (increase retrieval)

Boolean Operator: OR Using the operator OR will retrieve more results and expand your search To increase your search results use : synonyms spelling variants grammatical variants subdivisions of a concept You get many results

Boolean Operator: AND Using the operator AND will retrieve less (but more specific) results by narrowing your search to results containing two or more terms You find sources containing those terms Results must contain all of the terms to be retrieved You get fewer results, but they are more specific

Truncation Truncation is useful in retrieving the singular and plural forms of a word in the same search Putting an asterisk * after a root word will retrieve other words starting with that root Also useful for searching for terms with the same root For example, using the truncated term, “schizo*” will get you results featuring both schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder

Truncation

Limits Use limits to refine your search Limits include: Peer Reviewed Date of Publication Source Type Language Database

Research Topic: Find recent, peer reviewed journal articles on teenage drug addicts

Step 1. Maximize the number of search results by combining synonyms using OR Teen* OR Adolescent* OR Youth Search 1:

Step 1. Maximize the number of search results by combining synonyms using OR Drug Addiction OR Chemical Dependency OR Substance Abuse Search 2:

Step 2. Get rid of unrelated articles by combining our searches using AND We now have a lot of results, but each search contains articles that aren’t related to our topic

Concept 1 Teen* OR Adolescent* OR Youth Concept 2 Drug Addiction OR Chemical Dependency OR Substance Abuse AND Resulting articles contain: Teenagers and Drug Addiction Adolescent and Drug Addiction Teens and Substance Abuse Youth and Drug Addiction Adolescents and Chemical Dependency etc.

Step 3. Apply limits for: -Peer reviewed articles current -Source type: Academic journals -English
