Hurricane lamp. People used it in past and they still use it when there is no electricity. Candle light, oil lamp and charger light in absence of electricity.

People use electric bulb, tube light when the supply of electricity continues.

People use table lamp while studying. They use energy saving bulb to save energy. Table lamp Energy saving bulb

Head light They use headlights in front of their motor vehicles. Search light Searchlight is used to keep watch on things at night. These lights are especially used in the water vehicles.

Gas light People also use gas light in the entrances in absences of electricity. Stage light People use stage lights in the auditoriums and theatres.

Look at the pictures. Discuss with your partner what they are and when and where people use them. Then write the appropriate name under the picture.

Load shedding has become a great problem in our country. For example, Sohan could not sleep last night and his sister whose SSC exam is going on could not study either due to load- shedding. Load –shedding is maximum in the months of May and June for sharp rise of temperature. During this time people including students fall in intense crisis. The reason behind this crisis is a great shortage of electricity. The current demand for electricity is motor than 6,000MW a day but the supply is around 4,200MW only.

The summer night being sticky hot, life became hell without electricity.

A summer day is very hot. Temperature may rise up to 40 degree Celcious. Humidity rises up to 90 per cent in the atmosphere.Besides, there may be sweat, and wet, damp and stinky environment all the time.

Most of the area remains dark for long hours during load- shedding.

During the load-shedding at night people use a candle light or a hurricane lamp or a carosene lamp

 What happened to Sohan last night ?  How was the summer night ?  How is a summer day ?  What happens during load- shedding in Sohan`s area ?  What do people use at night during load –shedding ?

Complete columns B and C in the following table. Then calculate the shortage of electricity supply and write the results in column D. A Electricity B Demand C Supply D Deficit Nationwide Rural area Capital city

A Electricity B Demand C Supply D Deficit NationwideMore then 6,000MW Around 4,200 MW 1800 MW Rural areaAround 2,400MW 1200 MW Capital cityAround 1,400MW 650 MW750 MW

Pair work. Complete the dialogue X : What`s the nationwide demand of electricity ? Y : It`s ………………………… Mega Watt per day. X : How much can the power Authority supply ? Y : They can supply only ……………….Mega Watt per day. X : What`s the deficit/ How much is the deficit ? Y : Well, it`s…………………………………Mega Watt per day.

List of the problems caused by load -shedding

List of problems caused by load- shedding In the cityOutside the city 1. Unbearable hot and sweating atmosphere 2. Electric communications stops. 3. Industrial production gets stuck. 4. Students can not study 5. Anti-social activities increase. 6. Water supply is hampered. 1.There is darkness everywhere 2.Industries are at a deadlock. 3.Electric communication stops. 4.Students cannot study. 5.The suffering of the patients in the hospitals knows no bound.

Write a letter to an editor of a national daily expressing the sufferings of ordinary people caused by load – shedding in your locality.
