BACKGROUND FREUD’S THEORY OF PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT FREUD’S THEORY OF PERSONALITY GENERAL CRITICISMS OF FREUD’S WORK

METHODOLOGY CASE STUDY (clinical) PARTICIPANT: LITTLE HANS, 5 YEAR OLD : HIS MOTHER HAD BEEN A PATIENT OF FREUD’S, HIS FATHER WAS A KEEN FREUDIAN SYMPTOMS: ANXIETY, JEALOUSY, FEAR OF BEING SEPARATED FROM MOTHER, FEAR OF BEING BITTEN BY HORSES. I.e. OEDIPAL

PROCEDURE NOT FORMALLY PSYCHOANALYSED FATHER QUESTIONED HANS AND INTERPRETED RESPONSES. NOT A PROBLEM SINCE PSYCHOANALYSIS IS NOT “AN IMPARTIAL SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION, BUT A THERAPEUTIC MEASURE”

FINDINGS AND INTERPRETATION HANS WAS NEUROTIC PREOCCUPIED WITH HIS PENIS, URINATING & DEFECATION JEALOUS OF HIS NEW BABY SISTER FEAR OF THE BATH SCARED HE WOULD DROWN FOR WANTING HIS SISTER TO DROWN

GIRAFFE FANTASY HANS HAD A FANTASY ABOUT TWO GIRAFFES GIRAFFES = PARENTS EVENTS = MORNING IN HAN’S PARENTS BEDROOM

FEAR OF HORSES FEAR BEGAN JUST AFTER HE DEVELOPED FEAR OF LOSING HIS MOTHER, AND AT THE SAME TIME AS HE HAD BEEN WARNED ABOUT PLAYING WITH HIS WIDDLER. FREUD ARGUED THAT HANS, WHO LIKED GETTING IN BED WITH HIS MOTHER, HAD A REPRESSED LONGING FDR HER AND FOCUSED HIS LIBIDO ON HER.

FEAR OF HORSES 2 BEING BITTEN CARTS, FURNITURE VANS AND BUSES FALLING DOWN BLACK ON HORSES MOUTHS AND THE BLINKERS THEY WORE FEAR OF THE FATHER

THE ‘LUMF’ COMPLEX DISGUST OF EXCREMENT FATHER INVESTIGATED THE SYMBOLISM OF THIS HEAVILY LADEN CART = BODY LOADED WITH FAECES HANS CONNECTED LUMF WITH HIS SISTER

PLUMBER FANTASY No 1 PLUMBER UNSCREWS BATH STUCK A BIG BORER IN HANS’S STOMACH FANTASY OF PROCREATION BATH OF WATER = MOTHER’S WOMB BORER = FATHER’S PENIS

PLUMBER FANTASY No 2 PLUMBER CAME AND CUT OFF HIS BEHIND AND WIDDLER AND REPLACED THEM WITH LARGER ONES OVERCOMING OF CASTRATION ANXIETY

FINAL FANTASY HANS WAS PLAYING WITH HIS IMAGINARY CHILDREN…….. HANS WOULD MARRY HIS MOTHER, SHE WOULD HAVE THEIR CHILDREN. HIS FATHER WOULD MARRY HIS OWN MOTHER AND SO NOT NEED TO BE KILLED HANS THUS COMPLETED HIS IDENTIFICATION WITH HIS FATHER AND WAS CURED
