Symbolism: when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts Symbolism in literature can be subtle or obvious Authors may use the same object to convey deeper meaning or use variations of the same object to create a mood or feeling Symbolism is often used to support a literary theme in a subtle way SYMBOLISM

Fire Appears throughout Night as a symbol of the Nazis’ cruel power Fire and flames are used to symbolize death.
