Extension: Did you notice anything about how participants are used in experiments in terms of experiencing the IV? Discuss with somebody else what examples of laboratory, field and natural experiments you found.

* Experimental design

By the end of this lesson you will be able: * To describe what is meant by the following: Design, independent measures, repeated measures, matched pairs, order effects, counterbalancing, single blind technique, double blind technique, random allocation * To evaluate experimental design. * To explain how to overcome issues with experimental design.

* Design of an experiment * In an experiment there are two conditions: * Control condition * Experimental condition * The researcher has to decide whether a participant will participate in both or only one of the conditions. Repeated measures design Independent measures/group design Matched pairs design

* Independent Measures/groups Recruit a group of participants Divide them into two This group does the experimental task with the IV set for condition 1 This group does the experimental task with the IV set for condition 2 Measure the DV for each group Compare the results for the two groups

* Repeated Measures Recruit a group of participants Condition 1 Condition 2 The group does the experimental task with the IV set for condition 1 The group repeats the experimental task with the IV set for condition 2 Compare the results for the two conditions

* Matched Pairs Recruit a group of participants Find out what sorts of people you have in the group Recruit another group that matches them one for one Condition 1Condition 2 Compare the results for the matched pairs Treat the experiment as independent measures

* Matched pairs game Find another person who shares the same information as you in the following: Same grade in Science Same grade in English Literature Month born in Have an older and/or younger sibling Complete the activity on design in your booklet.

* Your task 1)Use your text book to find out and write down the definition of: Order effects 2) Complete the table on page 11 of your research methods booklet. Extension: Which design is preferable? Which design do you think is used more frequently?

* Controlling issues with design 1) Read the following definitions in your booklet: Counterbalancing Random allocation 2) Read the following definitions in your booklet: Single blind technique Double blind technique 3) Use these terms to explain how issues with each design can be overcome. Extension: Use the table on page 110 to add any extra detail to your notes

* Learning objectives : You are now able: * To describe what is meant by the following: Design, independent measures, repeated measures, matched pairs, order effects, counterbalancing, single blind technique, double blind technique, random allocation * To evaluate experimental design. * To explain how to overcome issues with experimental design.

* Homework Due next lesson: 1) Use your textbook to find an example of a study that has used independent groups and one that has used repeated measures (matched pairs is harder to find!) Preparation for next lesson: Find out what the non experimental methods are.
