IN NEGATIVE SENTENCES

 Indefinite articles in negative sentences:  Un, une, and des become de or d’ (a, an, any) in a negative sentence.  Tu as un frère?  Non, je n’ai pas de frère.  Est-ce-que Marcel a une tante?  Non, il n’a pas de tante.  M. Rondeau a des enfants?  Non, il n’a pas d’ enfants.  However, un, une, and des do not change after a form of the verb être in a negative sentence.  Ce sont des photos de mes parents; ce ne sont pas des photos de mes profs.  These are pictures of my parents; they’re not pictures of my teachers.

 You know that in negative sentences, des becomes de or d’.  Je ne veux pas de pommes de terre.  I don’t want (any) potatoes.  The partitive articles du, de la, and de l’ also change to de or d’ in negative sentences.  On ne va pas acheter de fromage.  We’re not going to buy (any) cheese.  Il n’y a pas d’ eau minérale.  There isn’t any mineral water.
