About Cardiology The Medical Specialty of Cardiology, a subspecialty of internal medicine. Encompasses the treatment of heart disease. Generally, three types of cardiology specialists provide medical care: the cardiologist the pediatric cardiologist and the cardiac surgeon
Selected Key Terms
Selected Key Terms: arteriole : A minute artery, especially one that, at its distal end, leads into the capillary the smallest of the arteries. atrium : Upper chamber of the heart capillary : Any of the microscopic blood vessels that connect the ends of the smallest arteries ( arterioles) with the beginning of the smallest veins ( venules ) where the oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. ischemia : A decreased supply of oxygenated blood to a body part or organ metabolism : The sum of all physical and chemical changes that take place within an organism; all energy and material transformations that occur within living cells.
Selected Key Terms: Pulmonary circulation : Circulation of blood throughout a network of vessels from the heart to the lungs for the oxygenation of blood and then back to the heart again. pulse : The regular, recurrent, expansion and contraction of an artery that corresponds to each beat of the heart; it can be felt thought the walls of the arteries, especially the superficial arteries, such as the radial and carotid arteries. septum : A wall, or partition dividing two cavities; a partition between the right and left sides of the heart.
Selected key terms: sinoatrial node ( SA node ) : Area in the right atrium that generates electrical impulses that cause the muscle fibers of both atria to contract, also know as the pacemaker of the heart. systemic circulation : Circulation of the blood from the body organs ( except the lungs ) to the heart and back again. ventricle : lower chamber of the heart.
