WHAT WAS THE FINAL SOLUTION?

What was decided at Wannsee? Watch the clip from ‘Conspiracy’ What was the Final Solution? (1:13)

What do you think is happening in this photo?

What were the disadvantages of using Mobile Killing Units (Einsatzgruppen)? Jewish men, women, and children await execution in a ravine. October 14, Ukraine In June 1941, Germany invaded Russia and occupied a lot of Russian land. This meant that even more Jews were under German rule. Hitler sent a special force of men, the ‘Einsatzgruppe’, into Russia. Their job was to murder as many Jews as they could. They murdered 2m people.

The people got off the lorries. Without weeping or crying they undressed and stood together in family groups, embracing each other and saying goodbye. I did not hear a single plea for mercy. I watched one family. An old woman with snow white hair held a one-year child in her arms singing to it and tickling it. The child squeaked with delight. The father held a ten year old boy by the hand, speaking softly to him. The boy was struggling to hold back his tears. The father pointed a finger to the sky, stroked his head and seemed to be explaining something to him. The SS man counted off 20 people. Then I heard a series of rifle shots. An eye-witness report of what the Einsatzgruppen did, written by a German builder. DISCUSS Which of these sentences describe the people in this source. 1.They just accepted what was going to happen to them. 2.They tried not to let the Nazis see they were frightened 3.They tried to argue with the Nazis What words tell us that the Jews knew what was going to happen to them Why do you think the Jewish people did not fight back against the soldiers who were with them?

Where did the Holocaust happen? Watch this clip and fill in the worksheet Your map shows where the victims of the Holocaust came from. It shows where Jews were murdered and where the extermination (death) camps were. Questions: 1.From which country did the largest number of murdered Jews come? 2.Where were all of the death camps built? 3.Why do you think they were built in that country? 4.Hitler invaded Eastern Europe (Russia, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary and Lithuania) between 1939 and From what the map shows you, what was the reason why he did this? 5.At the end of the war, the Russian army found what was left of the death camps before anyone else did. Why do you think this was?
