Presentation transcript:

Module 11 Instructor: Brenda Taylor

 what printmaking is.  about different kinds of printmaking.  meet Katsushika Hokusai.  complete several assignments.  take a review quiz.

 Printmaking is a very diverse art form.  Some prints are very involved, while others are very simple.  Some prints are made in relief style, while others are very painterly in its quality.

 Printmaking is considered an original art form because it is done completely by hand.  The basic idea behind the printmaking process is the ability to make more than one of a specific image in a limited edition (except for monotypes).  Printmaking is often confused with offset printing, what is commonly used for printed media such as newspapers, magazines, posters, etc.

 Key distinctions between printmaking and offset printing: ◦ offset printing uses only four colors, CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to create a rainbow of colors; in printmaking the artist must mix the colors he wishes to use. ◦ the four colors are all printed simultaneously in offset printing; they are printed one at a time in the printmaking process. ◦ The most important difference is the image is usually reproduced by photographic means in offset printing. In original printmaking, the artist makes the stencils and plates by hand and thereby creates the image.

Go to the Explore it folder to view explanations of the different types of printmaking: linocut woodcut lithography silkscreen etching drypoint

In this folder you will also find…  an interactive webpage (MoMA) that further explores the different types of printmaking.  a brief history of monoprints

 Warm up with some still life sketches here:  Assignment: On two pieces of paper that are 6"x9", draw at least two contour line drawings of a still life. Take notes about colors you might use to paint the pictures later. You can use one that you made at the website above or you can make up your own by assembling things from your house. Make sure your picture fills the whole area and has "space" to it!

 Practice drawing a landscape using this site:  Assignment: On two sheet of 6"x9" paper, draw two contour line drawings of landscapes. These can be ones that you made on the website above. Or you can go out into the "real world" and draw what you see. Make sure your picture fills the whole paper, and has "space" to it!  Do good drawings because one or more will be used in the "Create It" lesson.

Monoprint Assignment: Your assignment for this week is to create a monoprint using watercolors or acylic paints, or you can do the alternate assignment, Printmaking with a Bar of Soap. Once you have made a print that you think is of decent quality, scan it and post it to the printmaking forum. Be sure to label it “My Print.” If you need help, view this video: Monoprint with acrylics: ?ID=27&P=1 ?ID=27&P=1

Learn about Japan’s great printer, Katoshika Hokusai. He is best known for his creation of the woodblock series, Thirty Six Years of Mt. Fuji, which includes the iconic and internationally known print “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.”

 Visit this site to get an understanding of the woodblock technique known as Ukiyoe: nting/ nting/  You will learn about the basic techniques, as well as special techniques and different printing stages (traditional and contemporary).

Assignment: Answer the following questions with complete thoughts, proper grammar, and complete sentences.  1. What type of printmaking appealed to you most? Why? 2. Address some of the issues you had while working on your monoprint. 3. Was your monoprint successful in your opinion? Why or why not? 4. What were some of the challenges you ran into while working on your assignments this week? 5. Were you able to keep a sense of "space" in your print compared to your drawing (sketch)? Why or why not? 6. Would you consider exploring other types of printing as an art form on your own? Why or why not?  7. What do you think of your classmates prints? Pick one specifically and tell us why you liked it.
