ITS Trials Remuera Rd In-Pavement Warning System

Auckland Transport ITS Trials With the support of the executive leadership team we have collated a list of trials to be put into a programme. Trialling devices and signal behaviours. Devices such as smaller lanterns for cyclists or behaviours such as flashing amber left turn arrows. Improving safety or efficiency Auckland context

Our Immediate Focus Pedestrian awareness and safety Auckland cycle ways Cycle safety and efficiency Current trials of LED Road markers

LED Road Markers Green LED road markers for SVLs Amber and white LED road markers for tidal flow Red LED road markers for red light running

A Red Light Running Problem Unintentional red light running ‘Dog-leg’ intersections in the town centre Additional lanterns or angle adjustments Other options needed investigation

In-Pavement Light Warning System Driver distraction increases tunnel vision and failure to stop Using red LED road markers to reinforce the red signals Original investigation by Mitch Tse started in 2006 Ngan Truong resurrected the project in 2012

What we are proposing

How it will operate LED Road markers are synchronised to a specific red signal When that red signal is on, the markers are flashing red When the red signal is off, the markers are off

TCD Committee Process Submissions were made for trial approval Concerns were raised about driver perception of devices Focus groups were run to determine driver perception Drivers appear to understand the intention of these devices Trial approval was received in 2015

Detailed design is completed Internal and external consultation and feedback is completed Video Recording of pre-installation driver behaviour is being undertaken Progress so far

Early Nov: Public awareness to be raised Mid-Nov: LED installation 1 st Dec: LED markers in operation Feb 2016: Updates to key stakeholders May 2016: Public and driver surveys Nov 2016: Closing report to NZTA 2017: Potential use at other locations Next Stages
